In Modern English

He is from Tokat. In the book "Ferâiz-i Zekiyye" written by his son Yûsuf Efendi, he is recorded as the son of Sheikh Ali, son of Sheikh Cüneyd, son of Kara Selman, son of Nasrullah Tokâdî. He came to Amasya to study, took learning from Mevlânâ Hüsâmeddîn Hüseyin Tokâdî, one of the scholars of Amasya who died in 850 [1446-47], and from Mevlânâ Cemâleddîn Yûsuf Tokâdî, who died in 866 [1461-62], and gave public lectures.

When his scholarly merit became known, he became the son-in-law of his teacher "Yûsuf Çelebi," and his standing grew in the eyes of the scholars. He then became müderris of the Torumtay Madrasa, taught and passed on knowledge, and died around 878 [1473-74]. He was a learned and accomplished man, thoroughly versed in jurisprudence and its principles. His sons were Yûsuf and Mahmûd Çelebi. His descendants were called "Ahîzâdes." His line also continued through "el-Hâc Sinâneddîn Yûsuf Çelebi," the son of the treasurer Mahmûd Çelebi.

The Son of Ahî Cüneyd: Ahîzâde Yûsuf Efendi

The son Yûsuf of the person in this entry is the Hanafi jurist who appears in the sources as Ahîzâde Yûsuf Efendi. According to the sources he was from Tokat, he is also known as Ahî Çelebi, and his father's name was Cüneyd. This agrees with Hüsameddin's record of "Yûsuf, son of Cüneyd of Tokat." He was among the scholars of the time of Sultan Bayezid II. He served as a müderris in madrasas in Bursa, Edirne and Istanbul and was appointed to one of the Sahn-ı Semân madrasas. His death date appears in some sources as 902 [1497], 904 [1499] and 905 [1500]; Hüsameddin has written a separate entry on him and says there that he died in 914 [1508-09]. Yûsuf Efendi's life is treated in detail in the tenth entry of this volume.

The Torumtay Madrasa

The place where Ahî Cüneyd served as müderris takes its name from Seyfeddin Torumtay. Torumtay was raised among the slaves of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alâeddin Keykubad I, served as governor of Amasya, and lived in the Güdül Quarter. His name means "a sturdy, brave young man." The 1576 Amasya survey records the endowment revenues assigned to the Torumtay Imaret and the Torumtay Madrasa: the revenues of the village of Alala in the district of Argoma are written as belonging to the imaret, and certain shares of the villages of Ilıca and Zara in the district of Geldiklanâbâd to the madrasa. At that time the endowment revenues were being used by Mehmed Çelebi, son of Kaya Paşa, a descendant of Torumtay. The name Torumtay appears often in endowment records of later centuries as well, and these records give details of the mosque, the imaret and their staff.

An Inconsistency in the Sources

Hüsameddin gives the death of Cemâleddîn Yûsuf Tokâdî as 866 in this entry and as 865 in the tenth. This difference of one year for the same person is an inconsistency within the book itself, and the correct date could not be determined. Further, in the tenth entry Hüsameddin writes that "el-Hâc Sinan Çelebi bin Mahmûd Çelebi," the nephew of Ahîzâde Yûsuf and muharrir of the province of Amasya, was his son-in-law. In this entry, however, the son of the treasurer Mahmûd Çelebi is called "el-Hâc Sinâneddîn Yûsuf Çelebi." The two records may describe the same person, but because of the difference in names this cannot be said with certainty.

No information on Ahî Cüneyd Çelebi, on his teacher and father-in-law Cemâleddîn Yûsuf Tokâdî, or on Hüsâmeddîn Hüseyin Tokâdî was found in other sources.
