His Place in the Kutluşah Family
Ahmed Bey belongs to a side branch of the Kutluşah family, which ruled Amasya in the middle of the fourteenth century. The Emîr-i Kebîr Ahmed Şâh named in the genealogy must be Şihâbeddin Ahmed Şâh, the eldest son of Hacı Kutluşah. Present-day sources record that this person was for a time emir of Amasya, that in 1359 his father Kutluşah sent him to govern Sivas, and that he left the emirate of Amasya to his younger brother Şâdgeldi. Thus the Ahmed Bey in the entry is the great-grandson of the uncle of the emir of Amasya Devâtdâr Ahmed Pasha, and is counted as belonging to the branch of the family that entered Ottoman service.
The Battles of Kosovo and Ankara
The Battle of Kosovo, in which Ahmed Bey's father Hasan Bey died, was fought in 1389. Present-day sources write that in that year Prince Bâyezid left the administration of Amasya to Fahreddin Ahmed, went to Kosovo, and came to the throne when Murad I fell as a martyr. In the previous entry Hüsameddin notes that Ahmed Pasha sent soldiers and provisions from Amasya to this war; Hasan Bey's presence at Kosovo is a record showing that the Amasya troops actually took part in the battle.
The war of 804 that Hüsameddin calls "the war of Timur" is most probably the Battle of Ankara. This battle was fought on 28 July 1402, that is, in the last month of the year 804, on the Çubuk plain near Ankara, between Yıldırım Bâyezid and Timur, and ended in the rout of the Ottoman army. The fate of the battle was decided by the Black Tatars, whom Timur had won to his side through his spies, and by the forces of some Anatolian principalities, above all the Germiyan troops, changing sides. Hüsameddin also lists other beys who died "in the war of Timur" the same year; Taşanoğlu Ahmed Bey of Kedağra, told about in the next entry, is one of them. These records suggest that the beys of Amasya and its surroundings took part in the battle in the Ottoman army; but on which wing they fought is not stated.
No information on Ahmed Bey and his brother Cüneyd Bey was found in other sources.
