In Modern English

He was the son of Mevlânâ Hâfızeddîn Mehmed Çelebi, one of the scholars of Amasya, and is known as "Hâfızoğlu". He was one of the great scholars and sheikhs; in 807 [1404-05] he was seen in the records styled "Umdetü'l-Fuzalâ, Melîkü'l-Meşâyih" (the pillar of the virtuous, the sultan of the sheikhs). He died after 815 [1412-13].

The other scholar of the same name is Hâfız Doğanoğlu Mevlânâ Ahmed Şemseddîn Çelebi. This man, the son of Mevlânâ Bahâeddîn Mehmed Çelebi, son of Mevlânâ Bedreddîn Doğan, was also one of the scholars and died after 821 [1418-19].

Scholars Bearing the Same Name

This article is one of several short biographies that follow one another in Hüsameddin's book, all headed "Ahmed Çelebi, Mevlânâ Şemseddîn". To tell them apart, the reader must attend to their chains of descent. Doğanoğlu Ahmed Şemseddîn Çelebi, in the article's second paragraph, should not be confused with the Ahmed Çelebi treated a few articles earlier, who is thought to have died in 793 [1390-91]. That Ahmed Çelebi was the son of Mevlânâ Bedreddîn Doğan bin Abdullah; his father was among the freedmen of Şâdî Bey, the great emir of Amasya, and he himself had studied under Mevlânâ Fahreddîn İlyâs bin Aksarâyî. In that article Hüsameddin mentions Mevlânâ Emîneddîn Mehmed Çelebi as Ahmed Çelebi's brother.

The second Ahmed here is a grandson of Bedreddîn Doğan and the son of Bahâeddîn Mehmed Çelebi. It thus appears that this family, known by the epithet "Hâfız Doğan", was present in Amasya's scholarly circle for at least three generations: the grandfather Bedreddîn Doğan, his sons Ahmed, Emîneddîn Mehmed and (according to this article) Bahâeddîn Mehmed, and the grandson Ahmed Şemseddîn, who died after 821. Whether Bahâeddîn Mehmed is the same person as Emîneddîn Mehmed is unclear; Hüsameddin uses different epithets in the two articles.

The title "Melîkü'l-Meşâyih" given to Hâfızoğlu Ahmed Çelebi in the first part of the article is one that Hüsameddin also uses for other sheikhs of the same period; İğnecizâde Seyyidüddîn Ahmed el-Halvetî, for example, is called by the same title. Hüsameddin's phrase "seen in 807" suggests that he saw this title in a document of that date, probably a waqf deed or a court certificate, but the name of the document is not given.

No information about either scholar was found in sources other than Hüsameddin's book.
