The Lineage of Baba İlyâs
The lineage of the subject of this entry goes back to Baba İlyâs-ı Horasânî, one of the most debated figures of Anatolian history. Baba İlyâs came to Anatolia, most probably together with Turkmens from the land of the Khwarazmshahs that was destroyed during the Mongol invasion; according to the Menâkıbü'l-kudsiyye, written in 760 [1358-59] by his grandson Elvan Çelebi, he settled in the village of Çat near Amasya, today the village of İlyas, and opened a zaviye. He was the leader of the revolt that began in 637 [1240] against the Seljuk Sultan Gıyâseddin Keyhusrev II; the first defeat of the revolt took place in Amasya, and Baba İlyâs, who had taken refuge in Amasya Castle, was captured there and executed. Afterward his son Muhlis Pasha and his caliphs played a role in the spread of the movement.
Hüsameddin treats the lineage of Baba İlyâs as a many-branched family in Amasya. According to the biographies that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Hakverdioğlu compiled from the Amasya Tarihi, Hüsameddin counts three great branches of this lineage: the Âşık Pasha branch, the Kutlu Bey branch, and the Fîrûz Bey branch. According to the same author, Hüsameddin also writes that Şemseddîn Mahmûd Tuğrâî, son of Baba İlyâs, became vizier to the Seljuk Sultan İzzeddîn Keykâvus. The chain of descent in this entry shows Kutlu Bey and Fîrûz Bey, whom Hüsameddin counts as separate branches, as father and son; in this way it is seen more clearly that the two branches split from the same root. It is also recorded in the first volume of Hüsameddin's book that "Babazâde Nûreddîn Kutlu Bey" had a mescit and a fountain in front of it built at the head of the Meydan Bridge in 740 [1339-40]; it is very likely that Nûreddîn Kutlu Bey in the chain of descent is this person.
Hakverdioğlu notes that diametrically opposed views circulate about Baba İlyâs and his grandchildren, and that the information Hüsameddin gives does not agree with Elvan Çelebi's menâkıbnâme at every point. For this reason the intermediate links in the chain of descent should be read as Hüsameddin's transmission, based on waqf records and family genealogies.
Ârif Çelebi and His Sons
No information was found in other sources about Ârif Çelebi and his sons. Whether Muhyiddîn Mehmed and Ârifî Hüseyin Çelebi are treated separately in Hüsameddin's later volumes can be traced through the relevant entries.
