His father had risen from being Yörgüç Pasha's kethüda to a sanjak governorship; for this reason he was called "Emir Kethüdâzâde". Having learned from scholars, he became authorised to teach and became a well-known müderris.

Then he served as kadı in towns and cities and died around 870 [1465-66]. He was one of the great kadıs and scholars. His son is Muhyiddîn Mehmed Çelebi.

A Kethüda's Son

The significance of the article lies in its shedding light on Yörgüç Pasha's retinue in Amasya. Yörgüç Pasha became beylerbeyi of Rum in 826 [1423] and until his death in 845 [1442] governed this broad province centred on Amasya, brought under obedience bandit groups such as the Kızılkocaoğulları and the independent beys of the region, and finally rose to the rank of vizier. The kethüda of such a beylerbeyi was the closest man, running all his affairs. Mehmed Bey's promotion from this post to a sanjak governorship and his carrying the epithet "Emir Kethüda" shows, at least in this example, that the kethüdaship was a step opening onto the rank of the beys.

The second generation of the family's passing from the sword to the pen is also noteworthy: Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi, the son of a bey, chose the madrasa path and served as müderris and kadı. In this part of Hüsameddin's work there are also other people who rose from Yörgüç Pasha's circle: his relative and son-in-law Atabeyzâde Ahmed Bey, his brother-in-law Ahmed Pasha, and Müneccim Çelebi of Baghdad, who tutored his sons, are among them. The pasha's patronage appears to have extended, along with his relatives, to the families of the officials in his retinue.

No information about Mehmed Bey, Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi or his son Muhyiddîn Mehmed Çelebi was found in other sources. Hüsameddin also does not give the names of the towns and cities where he served as kadı.
