A Family of Scholars
The genealogy Hüsameddin gives for Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi is repeated exactly, in another source, in the genealogical record of his nephew Muhyiddîn Mehmed Efendi. According to the entry in the Türk Edebiyatı İsimler Sözlüğü, Muhyiddîn Mehmed Efendi's record reads "Hatîb Kâsım Efendi b. Yakûb Efendi b. Ahmed Efendi b. Mehmed Efendi b. Ebubekr b. el-Hâc Emir Ali." Thus it is supported by two separate sources that Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi and Hatîb Kâsım were sons of the same father, Ya'kûb Çelebi, and that the family can be traced four generations back to el-Hâc Emîr Ali.
The best-known name of the family is Şemseddîn Ahmed's brother Hatîb Kâsım Efendi. Hüsameddin mentions him as "mu'allim-i Sultânî"; Hatîb Kâsım was one of the teachers of Prince Bayezid in Amasya. It is known that the famous calligrapher Şeyh Hamdullah also learned the religious sciences and knowledge of language and literature from Hatîb Kâsım Efendi. According to the information Hüsameddin gives in the entry on Prince Ahmed, Hatîb Kâsım in 889 [1484] became, this time, the teacher of Prince Ahmed and died in 894 [1488-89]. Şemseddîn Ahmed's taking on the mütevelliship of the Halfet Gâzi waqfs "on his brother's death" must have been after this date.
The nephew mentioned at the end of the entry, Muhyiddîn Mehmed Efendi, is an important scholar known as Hatîbzâde or İbnü'l-Hatîb. Born in Amasya on 27 Şâban 864 [17 June 1460], he served as müderris at the great madrasas in Bursa, Istanbul, and Edirne, and in the time of Bayezid II, like his father, took on the tutorship of Prince Ahmed. Selim the Grim appointed him müderris of the madrasa he had built near Hagia Sophia and later transferred him to one of the Sahn-ı Semân madrasas. He died on 2 Zilkade 940 [15 May 1534], Kemalpaşazâde led his funeral prayer, and he was buried in Eyüp.
Halfet Gâzi and His Waqf
Halfet Gâzi (properly Halîfet Gazi, among the people Hilfet Gazi), to whom the family is tied, was one of the Danishmendid emirs; after the end of the principality he entered Seljuk service and in 619 [1222], in the time of Alâeddin Keykubad I, was appointed governor of Amasya. He fell as a martyr in 1232 in a campaign against the Georgians and was buried in his tomb in Amasya. According to its inscription, the waqf deed of 622 [1225] of his madrasa, built in 606 [1209-10], has survived to the present day. The madrasa and the tomb are today in the provincial center; the complex is placed in some sources on Torumtay Street in the Şamice quarter, and in others in the Gökmedrese quarter. The south wall and the east section of the madrasa partly stand, and the two-story tomb with an octagonal body is preserved.
Hüsameddin counts the family of Şemseddîn Ahmed as descended from Halfet Gâzi and shows that the mütevelliship of the waqf remained in this family. No information on this line of descent was found in other sources. No information could be found in other sources about Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi himself and his son Abdullah Efendi either.
