Prince Ahmed's Amasya and the Struggle for the Throne
The prince mentioned in the entry is Prince Ahmed, son of Bayezid II. Born around 1466, he was known as the son whom his father wanted to see on the throne, and for many years he governed the sanjak in Amasya. He lost the struggle for the throne that he entered into with his brother Selim; his army was defeated in the battle fought at Yenişehir near Bursa on 24 April 1513, and he himself was captured and executed shortly after. The event Hüsameddin calls the "struggle for the sultanate" is this civil war. Some of the prince's sons were also killed in Amasya in the same year, and some died in the plague epidemic in Egypt.
A small note on the date is needed. The Hijri year 918 begins in the spring of 1512 and ends in the spring of 1513; the battle took place in April 1513. When the calendar is converted, the date of the battle falls in Hijri 919. Hüsameddin ties the deaths of both beys to 918 and gives no day or month; so the one-year difference may depend on which event he took as the basis, but it is not possible to settle this from the text.
The Name Devâtdâr and the Line of Şâdgeldi
Devâtdâr is a name used like a surname in this family. Elsewhere in the book too, Hüsameddin mentions the name of Devâtdâr Ahmed Pasha in the context where the line of Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha is described. Şâdgeldi, according to the sources, is a name who was emir of Amasya from 1359 until his death in 1381. The family in the entry therefore appears to be a family reaching back to the old ruling circles of Amasya. The details of the kinship in between are not given in this entry.
No information was found in other sources about Velî Bey, Ahmed Bey, Ahmed Sâkî Bey, and Hacı Ahmed Çelebi named in the entry.
