Literary and Historical Commentary
Added Chapters
The closing note of 890 in the S manuscript now lies behind; this verse belongs to the part that follows it. According to the edition's introduction, chapter 162 and those after it are taken from manuscript A1 and give the impression of having been added by other hands; the pen name is spelled here as "'Âşikî". For this reason this verse and those that follow should be kept apart from the part of the work certainly by Âşıkpaşazâde.
Çukurova
The hundred and sixty-second chapter tells of the clans that had lived in Çukurova since Süleyman Şah, the Yüreğir, Kusun Varsak, Kara İsa, Üzer, Gündüz and Kuş Temür, and of the house of Ramazan; it says that Egypt gave out lordships for bribes. The hundred and sixty-third chapter explains what caused "this present conquest": the Egyptians had ruined Çukurova with oppression. After Sultan Bayezid took the province of Karaman, the cry of the weak of that province reached the sovereign's ear, and the sovereign wished to send them the shade of his mercy. The mercy is told through an image of the sun. The sun sends a gleam to the world; it is a single gleam, yet it becomes a sign. In the second couplet this gleam turns into a light that fills the world, and its traces are plain to see. The last couplet says the khan's hand has reached west and east and counsels the author to begin the register and the telling. Cihana, nişâne, 'ayâne and beyâna are the rhyme words.
