Nuri Uysal's year of birth is entered in the performers' list as 1929; when he stepped up to the microphone in Gümüşhacıköy on 9 July 1943 he was thirteen or fourteen years old. His occupation is written on the slip as farm labourer, and beside it, in quotation marks, the note "Üç sınıflı mektepten mezun", "graduated from a three-class school". The first of the two songs he sang, "Bülbül", opens with the line "Bülbülün ganedi yeşil", "the nightingale's wing is green". The TRT repertoire does not know the song, and neither its words nor its notation were printed.

Lyrics

Bülbülün ganedi yeşil

This is the only line that passed from the slip into the catalogue. "Ganet" is the local pronunciation of "kanat", wing; the line opens with the image of a nightingale with green wings. No second line survives to show whether the image leads to a beloved or to a place. No publication holds the other lines or a notation; on the record, Nuri Uysal's voice opens side A of no. 1137.

Story

From whom the boy learned this song, and on what occasion it was sung in the village, the slip leaves unrecorded. No tale of how it was composed has made its way into print either.

Musical Features

Of the scale and metre nothing is known. Since the slip records no instrument for Nuri Uysal, he may have sung it with the voice alone; even this is uncertain, because the slips do not always name an accompanist.

Performers and Recordings

No other recording of the song is known. Right after it, on the same record side, comes Nuri Uysal's second song, "Tahtadandır", which begins "Tahtadandır şu Mahmud'un bacası". These two are the last recordings the team made in Gümüşhacıköy: the third piece on the record was taken from Âşık Musa Aslan in Merzifon, where the team returned the same night. The performer recorded just before Nuri Uysal came from the same village, Derbentopruğu: the kaval player Osman Atmaca, one of whose tunes is described on the Davarı Suya İndirme page.
