In Modern English

He was the son of Hacı Hasan Çelebi of Merzifon. He completed his studies at Merzifon under Recebzâde el-Hâc Mehmed, müderris of the Merzifon Sultâniyye, and at Amasya under el-Hâc Mehmed, known as "Uzun Müderris," and the exegete Hızır Efendi. Returning to his hometown, he continued for years to teach at Merzifon as ders-i âm (a müderris giving lectures open to the public) and müderris of the Eynel Bey Madrasa, and in early 1094 [January 1683] he departed to the eternal world. He was one of the great scholars: a jurist, committed to the sharia, and a preacher.

His Teachers and the Scholarly Circle of Amasya and Merzifon

Ebûbekir Efendi's teachers are names that also appear in other entries of Hüsameddin's book and show the scholarly circle that operated between Amasya and Merzifon in the seventeenth century. In the entry Köprülü'lü Kara Müderriszâde Ahmed Efendi in the same volume of the book, it is written that this man came to Amasya, stayed at the Sultan Bayezid Madrasa and completed his studies under Uzun Müderris el-Hâc Mehmed, Müftü Habilzâde Mehmed and the "famous exegete" Hızır Efendi. In the same volume there is also the biography of Uzun Müderris's son Ahmed Efendi: this man, known as "Uzun Müderriszâde" in Amasya and "Uzun" in Istanbul, after studying with his father went to Istanbul, became a müderris by examination in 1079, and died in 1092 while müderris of the Dârülhadîs Sinan Pasha. Thus it is understood that Uzun Müderris and Hızır Efendi were teachers from whom students of both Merzifon and Köprü took lessons at Amasya in the same years.

The Merzifon Sultâniyye, where his first teacher Recebzâde el-Hâc Mehmed served as müderris, is a madrasa with an open courtyard and four iwans, built between 817 and 820 [1414-1417] by order of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed. As M. Baha Tanman notes, this madrasa, called the "Merzifon Sultâniyye" among the people, became from its founding one of the important centres of learning of the period and was repaired in the Republican period by the General Directorate of Waqfs.

The Eynel Bey Madrasa

No information was found in the sources read about the Eynel Bey Madrasa, where Ebûbekir Efendi taught for years. In the section of Şeyhî Mehmed Efendi's Vekâyi'u'l-Fuzalâ listing the judges of Erzurum, it is recorded that Hâfız Abdurrahman Efendi became kadı of Erzurum in Receb 1066 while müderris of the "İlbeg (?) Madrasa at Merzifon." It is possible that this name, which Ramazan Ekinci, who published the text, reads with a question mark, was confused in its Ottoman spelling with the name Eynel Bey; whether the two names indicate the same madrasa could not be verified.

No information about Ebûbekir Efendi himself, his father Hacı Hasan Çelebi, or his teacher Recebzâde el-Hâc Mehmed was found in other sources.
