The Sanjak of Amasya and Its Beys

When Amasya came under Ottoman rule it became the center of a sanjak of the same name. The sanjak was one of the important units of the province of Rum and in the early years served as the center of that province. From the fifteenth century to the middle of the sixteenth, the city was one of the principal centers to which princes were sent to gain experience in government. After the killing of Şehzade Mustafa it lost this character, and Manisa became the only princely sanjak in its place. From then on Amasya was governed by sanjak beys appointed from the center. Derviş Bey was one of these sanjak beys. His death at the beginning of 1635 falls in a period when the sanjak of Amasya was no longer a princely sanjak.

The number of districts in the sanjak grew over time. At the beginning of the sixteenth century the sanjak consisted of the districts of Amasya center, Lâdik and Merzifon; it reached seven districts in 1576-77, nine in the middle of the seventeenth century according to Evliya Çelebi, and eleven in documents of 1665. Hüsameddin's phrase "sanjak bey of Amasya" in this entry describes this large administrative unit.

The seat of the province of Rum moved between Amasya and Tokat until 1520, and the survey of 1520 records Sivas as the provincial center. The title "Beylerbeyi" in Hüsameddin's text may point to this provincial system, that is, to the beylerbeyi of the province of Rum or to the beylerbeyi of another province; the text does not say which.

The Bâğ-ı Helkis Quarter and the Fountain

At the beginning of the sixteenth century Amasya had fifty-five quarters, and this number was still fifty-five at the end of the century. We could not establish from the sources we read the present name of the Bâğ-ı Helkis quarter or whether the fountain Güllü Hanım had built still stands. A study of the water structures in the center of Amasya reports that twenty-three Ottoman-period fountains were entered in its catalog, that they were built between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries and that most are sound and usable. The source does not make clear whether one of these fountains is Güllü Hanım's.

Family and Circle

The entry lists a bey family of three generations: Derviş Mehmed Çelebi, his son Pîr Hüseyin Bey and his son Derviş Bey. In the same volume, the entry for Esmâ Hân Sultan also mentions "Pîr Hüseyin Bey, one of the beys of Amasya"; the two may be the same person, but the text does not say so. A search was made for Beylerbeyi Hüseyin Pasha; his identity could not be determined, and no link has been drawn so as not to confuse him with other pashas of that name.

What Could Not Be Verified

No information was found in other sources on Derviş Bey, Pîr Hüseyin Bey and Derviş Mehmed Çelebi, on Beylerbeyi Hüseyin Pasha, or on Güllü Hanım herself. The present state of the fountain and the mescid could not be determined either. The information in the text rests on Hüsameddin's record.
