The Second Sheikh of the Hicâbî Lodge

İbrâhim Efendi is the son-in-law and heir to the seat of Abdülbâki Hicâbî Efendi, the best-known spiritual figure of the town of Ziyaret (formerly Ziyare). Hicâbî Efendi was a scholar who came from Bahçesaray in Crimea, studied in Amasya under Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi, and then attached himself to Turhallı Şeyh Mustafa Efendi, of the Müceddidî branch of the Naqshbandi order. After settling in Ziyaret he had a lodge built next to the Keçioğlu Mosque in 1212 [1797] and had the mosque repaired too. From this date the mosque began to be called the "Hicâbî Baba Mosque".

Present-day sources confirm and complete the information Hüsameddin gives: after Hicâbî Efendi's death his khalifa and son-in-law Seyyid Şeyh İbrâhim Zühdî Efendi took his place, and with his death the lodge was turned into a school and lost its character as a lodge. That is, the İbrâhim Efendi of the entry is called "Zühdî" in some sources and is the second and last sheikh of the Hicâbî Lodge. In Hüsameddin's Hicâbî entry too, "his son-in-law Ziyâreli eş-Şeyh İbrâhim Efendi" is counted first of the three famous khalifas, and it is noted that he is buried beside his sheikh. Some sources also give the name of Dağıstanlı Şeyh Hacı Yâsin Efendi as a second khalifa of Hicâbî.

The Tomb and Mosque Today

The Hicâbî Baba Mosque and tomb stand today in the town of Ziyaret. It is recorded that the tomb contains four men's graves together with Hicâbî Efendi, and that a woman was later buried there too; according to Hüsameddin, İbrâhim Efendi is also buried beside his sheikh. The tomb is open to visitors and is a place the people of Ziyaret often visit. The people of the area also call Hicâbî "Gül Baba"; according to local tradition, the change of the town's old name "Ziyere" to "Ziyaret" is also because of this tomb. A legend is also told that Hicâbî's name came from a remark his sheikh made about his shyness ("hicap").

Hüsameddin places İbrâhim Efendi's death at the beginning of 1253. The year 1238 that he gives as the death date of his father-in-law agrees with present-day sources.
