In Modern English

He is the son of Lâdikli Hacı Mehmed Efendi bin İbrâhim, mufti of Amasya, known as "Fetvâcı". He completed his studies under his father and especially under Payaslı Hacı Mehmed Efendi, received the ijaza, and became a ders-i âm (a madrasa professor who gave public lectures); when his father died he became professor of the madrasa built by Hacı Mustafa Ağa, mütesellim of Amasya, immediately west of the Saraçhâne Mosque.

Later, when Ürgüplüzâde Hacı Necîb Ahmed Efendi became mufti of Amasya, he became his müsevvid and emînü'l-fetvâ (the assistant who prepared fatwa drafts and conducted fatwa business). He died in the first days of 1247 [June 1831]. He was a learned, pious, dignified man; he was a master of inheritance law and knew both the fundamental principles and the detailed rulings of jurisprudence, and was the chief person on whom Ürgüplüzâde relied.

The Saraçhâne Mosque and the Madrasa of Hacı Mustafa Ağa

The madrasa where İbrâhim Efendi taught was next to the Saraçhâne Mosque, one of the oldest mosques of Amasya. The mosque was built in 1372 by Şadgeldi Pasha, the emir of Amasya; at first it was called the Şadgeldi Pasha Mosque after its founder, and from the time of Çelebi Mehmed it took the name Saraçhâne Mosque because of the saddler shops around it. A domed space was later added on the west to the building, which was originally square in plan with a single dome. The mosque stands today in the center of Amasya, on Ziya Paşa Boulevard, and was registered in 1992.

In Hüsameddin's book this madrasa appears in many entries and is always described as "the madrasa built by Hacı Mustafa Ağa adjoining (or in the courtyard of) the Saraçhâne Mosque". According to the information the book gives, Çelebizâde Hacı Hüseyin Efendi served as professor at the madrasa in 1179 [1765-66], Âkifzâde Abdürrahîm Efendi between 1200 and 1214; and Caniklizâde Abdülkâdir Efendi died in Jumada al-Awwal 1247 while professor of this madrasa. The closeness between İbrâhim Efendi's death in early 1247 and Caniklizâde's death a few months later suggests that the madrasa may have passed to Caniklizâde after İbrâhim Efendi; this is a guess arising from a comparison of the two entries. No clear information was found in the sources on whether the madrasa stands today.

The Ürgüplüzâde Family

Ürgüplüzâde Necîb Ahmed Efendi, whose assistant İbrâhim Efendi was, is the son of Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi, one of the most influential scholars of Amasya at the end of the eighteenth century. Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi was the teacher of many scholars, above all Hicâbî Abdülbâki Efendi. From Hüsameddin's other entries it is understood that Necîb Ahmed Efendi was removed from the muftiship in 1232 [1816-17] during the first "Janissary-student incident" in Amasya, and died in 1254 [1838-39]. İbrâhim Efendi's being called "the support of Ürgüplüzâde" shows how important his mastery of inheritance law was in the daily functioning of the muftiship.

The name of his father, "Fetvâcı" Lâdikli Hacı Mehmed Efendi, suggests that the family came from Ladik. No information on Fetvâcızâde İbrâhim Efendi himself was found in other sources.
