What "Köprülü" Means
Hüsameddin's word "Köprülüdür" is a place-name adjective. "Köprü" is a town belonging to Amasya (today's Vezirköprü). It is stated that Köprülü Mehmed Pasha too took this name because, after being born in Albania and recruited through the devshirme, he went to the town of Köprü in the Amasya district, married Ayşe Hanım there and lived there. Köprülü Mehmed Pasha had inns, mosques, small mosques, schools and fountains built in many places such as Jenő, Rudnik, Turhal, Vezirköprü, Gümüşhacıköy and Taraklı; Vezirköprü is among the places named for these charitable works. Köprülü Mehmed Pasha became grand vizier on 15 September 1656, died at Edirne on 31 October 1661 and is buried in the complex he had built at Çemberlitaş. A study on the origin of the epithet Köprülü likewise states that debates on the subject continue and that its article aims to offer a new point of view. Whether Governor Yûsuf Pasha of Tiflis had any connection with Köprülü Mehmed Pasha is not stated in the sources examined; for this reason nothing can be said about Yûsuf Pasha's relation to this family.
The Campaign Years
İskender Bey's record lists three major campaigns of the first half of the seventeenth century. The war against Poland is the campaign Osman II made before Khotyn in 1030 (1621); in September-October 1621 a peace offer was accepted and Khotyn Castle was left to the Voivodeship of Moldavia. The Baghdad war corresponds to the campaign led by Hâfız Ahmed Pasha; Gürcü Mehmed Pasha became beylerbeyi of Damascus in 1035 after this campaign, so it can be said that the campaign took place around 1034-35. The Revan war is the campaign Murad IV set out on in 1044 (1635); Hüsameddin's placing İskender Bey's death at Revan refers to this campaign. The attacks against the Polish and Cossack army, which had built strong fortifications before Khotyn, produced no result despite Osman II's great effort, and the sultan left on 23 Dhu al-Qa'dah 1030 (9 October 1621) to return to Istanbul. During the Revan campaign Gürcü Mehmed Pasha, beylerbeyi of Anatolia, was given the task of repairing the castle of Akhaltsikhe. The record of his being appointed sanjak bey through the "himmet" of Hâce Ömer Efendi is similar to the Jeddah appointment in entry 108: in both entries Ömer Efendi's influence over appointments is stressed. In the sources, however, it is written that the sultan made Ömer Efendi authoritative in appointments of the learned class and other matters; there is no direct record for sanjak bey appointments.
The Sanjak of Amasya
After the middle of the sixteenth century Amasya lost its character as a princely sanjak and was governed by sanjak beys appointed from the center. İskender Bey's becoming sanjak bey of Amasya in 1034 is an example of this arrangement. According to Hüsameddin's record İskender Bey served between 1030 and 1035 in the sanjaks of Urfa, Kirkuk, Amasya and Harput; the phrase "passing on his sanjaks" describes this frequent change of posts.
