Müderris and Ders-i Âm

Müderris is the name given to the highest-ranking teacher in the madrasas. Since the Seljuk age müderrises were appointed by the vizier or the sultan and began their post with a ceremony. Their pay depended on the waqf income of the madrasa where they served. If a müderris was appointed to more than one madrasa, he gave lessons in person in only one of them and in the others assigned a paid deputy. The Yörgüç Pasha and Mehmed Pasha madrasas that Hüsameddin lists for İsmâil Efendi may be successive posts of this kind; the records do not say so explicitly. The expression "ders-i âm" also occurs in Amasya's waqf records. The phrase "bâ-şart-ı tedris ders-i âm" found as a condition of a waqf attached to the Şeyh Osman Zâviye shows that giving lessons was made a condition in that waqf.

The Yörgüç Pasha Madrasa

Yörgüç Pasha served as beylerbeyi of the province of Rum as the lala of Murad II and had a mosque, a madrasa, an imaret and two baths built in Amasya. When he died in 1442 he was buried in the tomb of the mosque he had built. His mosque stands today; his madrasa is known from waqf deeds and survey registers. The two madrasas Hüsameddin lists are among the institutions founded by the ruling class in Amasya's fifteenth-century waqf system.

The Mehmed Pasha Complex

The Mehmed Pasha Complex is located near the Yeşilırmak, in the district still called the Mehmed Pasha quarter today. The founder of the complex is Hızır Paşazâde Mehmed Pasha (d. 900/1495), vizier of Bayezid II and lala of Prince Ahmed. According to the inscription on the mosque's door the building was completed in Muharram 891, that is, January 1486. The complex consisted of a mosque, madrasa, imaret, tomb, tabhâne, zâviye, fountain and graveyard; the madrasa and imaret were destroyed by fire, the mosque and tomb have survived to the present and were damaged in the earthquake of 1939. Hüsameddin's saying "müderris of Mehmed Pasha" points to the madrasa in this complex.

Musliheddîn Mûsâ Çelebi and the Mahzenü'l-Fıkh

Musliheddîn Mûsâ Çelebi, named as İsmâil Efendi's teacher, appears as mufti of Amasya and author of the jurisprudence work called "Mahzenü'l-Fıkh". In searches about this work and its author no verifiable detail could be reached; for this reason nothing can be said about his life, his years as mufti or the content of the work beyond the information Hüsameddin gives. It is known that Amasya had more than forty madrasas in this age and that the city was counted among Anatolia's important centres of learning; İsmâil Efendi is a müderris who grew up in this setting.

The Name İmâmzâde

İsmâil Efendi's being called "İmâmzâde" comes from his father's duty as imam. About the person and family bearing this name in Amasya no information was found in another source.

What Could Not Be Verified

About İsmâil Efendi, his father Abdülkerîm Çelebi, his son Abdülkerîm Efendi and his teacher Musliheddîn Mûsâ Çelebi, no information was found in another source. The death date of 958 and the müderris posts rest only on Hüsameddin's record.
