In English
1. God spoke with you on a mountain and gave revelation; your speech is nothing but revelation.
2. Those firm mountains upon the earth are nothing but pulpits; and it is God who spread out the earth. (The second line appears to be short in metre; the reading and sense are ours.)
Literary and Historical Commentary
The line of na't begun in the preceding Turkish quatrain carries on in this Arabic one, which again addresses the Prophet. The first line says that revelation began on a mountain; the first revelation that came down at Hira and Moses' speaking with God on Sinai seem to merge in this single line. The second line is a summary of the verse in the sura al-Najm, "He does not speak from desire; it is nothing but a revelation revealed" (53:3-4).
The second couplet builds an unexpected image. In the Qur'an mountains are named "revâsî", weights holding the earth steady; the poet says they are in truth pulpits. Revelation came down on a mountain; so the mountains of the earth resemble the pulpits from which revelation is recited. The last word, "deḥâ", means to spread out and level the earth, and connects to the verse in the sura al-Nâzi'ât, "and after that He spread out the earth" (79:30).
The Arabic text in the thesis is set with vowel marks; the second line looks short compared with the others and does not fit the metre fully. Neither the reading in Latin letters nor the English prose is found in the thesis; both were prepared here and carry a margin of error.
