The Line of Devâtdâr Ahmed Pasha

The family to which Burak Beyzâde Ahmed Bey belongs reaches back to the pre-Ottoman rulers of Amasya. In the second half of the fourteenth century Amasya had lived under the rule of Hacı Seyfeddin Şâdgeldi, son of Hacı Kutlu Shah, as an emirate attached to the Eretna Principality but largely on its own. Şâdgeldi became emir of Amasya in 1359 and remained in this post until his death in 1381. According to Hüsameddin, Devâtdâr Ahmed Pasha is the son of this Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha and is mentioned with the title "Beylerbeyi of Amasya." Burak Bey, one of the pasha's sons, gained standing because he showed loyalty to Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and invited him to Amasya, and died in 821 [1418]; it is also Hüsameddin's record that he had a school near the Saraçhane Mosque, his grandfather's mosque in Amasya.

The Ahmed Bey named in the entry is one of the representatives of this line in the sixteenth century. That the family kept its continuity in state service in this period is understood from Hüsameddin's other entries: Budak Bey of the same line, while among Prince Mustafa's associates, was rewarded with a sanjak governorship in 960 [1553] on the prince's being killed. No separate information was found in other sources about Hüseyin Pasha, beylerbeyi of Sivas, shown in the entry as Ahmed Bey's brother.

The Record of the "German War"

Hüsameddin says that Ahmed Bey died in 928 in the "German War." The Hijri year 928 corresponds to the period from the end of 1521 to the end of 1522 CE. These years are the early period of the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent; which campaign Hüsameddin means is not understood from the text. Ahmed Bey's guardianship of Amasya falls in 922 [1516], that is, just after the years when Selim the Grim wintered in Amasya after Çaldıran. No information was found about Ahmed Bey outside Hüsameddin's record.
