Two Old Beylik Families of Amasya

This short entry brings together the sixteenth-century representatives of two deeply rooted families of Amasya that came down from before the Ottomans. The first is the family of Hacı Kutlu Şah, who ruled Amasya in the time of the Eretna state. Hacı Kutlu Şah's second son Hacı Seyfeddin Şadgeldi was appointed emir of Amasya by his father in late summer 1359 and ruled the city until his death in 1381, apart from a small interruption. According to what Hüsameddin tells elsewhere in his book, Şadgeldi Pasha was taken prisoner and killed in the battle of Kayseri against Kadı Burhâneddîn, ruler of Sivas, in Rabi' al-Awwal 783 [June 1381]. The Ahmed Bey of the entry is the great-grandson of Burak Bey of this family. After the passage to Ottoman rule the family continued its existence through military offices such as zeamet and sanjak bey.

The second family is the line of Yörgüç Pasha, lala of Murad II and beylerbeyi of Rum. Yörgüç Pasha died in 845 [1442] and was buried in the tomb of the mosque he had built in Amasya. The two families are also linked by marriage. According to a study on Yörgüç Pasha's waqf deeds, Safiye Hatun, one of the pasha's wives, was the daughter of Mustafa Bey, son of Şadgeldi Pasha.

Ali Bey, mentioned in the entry as Yörgüç Pasha's son, is among the least-known children in the sources. A general encyclopedia entry on this subject lists Hızır, Yûnus and Mustafa as the pasha's sons and does not mention Ali Bey. By contrast, Fatma Toruk, who studied the waqf deed of the pasha's son Mustafa Bey, writes that Yörgüç Pasha had by Şahbulu Hatun sons named Abdi, Hızır, Ali and Yûnus and daughters named Sitti and Hundi Hatun, and that nothing is known of Abdi and Ali Beys. The lineage "Ahmed Bey, son of Ali Bey, son of Hüseyin Bey, son of Ali Bey, son of Yörgüç Pasha" given by Hüsameddin is among the rare records showing that this little-known Ali Bey branch continued into the sixteenth century.

The Battle of Çaldıran

The Battle of Çaldıran, in which Ahmed Bey's father Ali Bey fell as a martyr, was fought on 23 August 1514 (920) between Yavuz Sultan Selim and Shah İsmâil. In the battle the Ottoman side lost the beylerbeyi of Rumeli and ten sanjak beys. According to Hüsameddin, Ahmed Bey was raised to sanjak bey in 921, the very next year after his father's martyrdom. No information on the two Ahmed Beys of the entry was found in other sources.
