The Gümüşlüzades
Ahmed Bey belongs to the Gümüşlüzades, one of the most influential families of Amasya in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The family's name comes from its also being called "Gümüşlüoğlu" because it came from the town of Gümüş, attached to Amasya. His grandfather Tâceddîn Mahmûd Bey was an emir who served as governor of Amasya in the Ilkhanid period. Present-day research likewise records that Demirtaş, the Ilkhanid governor of Anatolia, appointed Gümüşlüzâde Tâceddin Mahmud Bey governor of Amasya after 1315, took him as an adviser after some time, and in May 1322 replaced him with Atabey Nâsıreddin Ahmed.
The name of Tâceddîn Mahmûd Bey lives on in the Gümüşlü Mosque, which stands today in the center of Amasya. The mosque, on a small rise facing the Hükümet Bridge and looking down slightly on Yavuz Selim Square, was first built in 1326, and its builder was Tâceddin Mahmud Çelebi. The original wooden-roofed building collapsed in the earthquake of 1419, was rebuilt in 1491 by Defterdar Mahmud Bey, was repaired after the fire of 1612, and took its present name with the repair by Gümüşlüzâde İbrahim Bey in 1688. The present building is of regular cut stone, square in plan, with an octagonal dome; the porch to the north was added in 1903.
Hoca Celâl Çelebi and the Arrival of Halvetism in Amasya
The grandson Hoca Celâl Çelebi, whom Hüsameddin mentions briefly at the end of the entry, is connected with an important turning point in the religious life of Amasya. Pîr Şücâeddin İlyas, who returned to Amasya in 1406 after the death of Timur, is the person who brought Halvetism to the city. According to Kadir Özköse's study, Hâce Celâl Çelebi, a relative of Pîr İlyas, a year after the sheikh's arrival in Amasya had the Gümüşlüoğlu Tekke built and placed it at the disposal of the Halvetîs. This tekke, also called "Tâciye," is the first tekke in Amasya devoted to Halvetism. It is noted that in the hardship of the interregnum years the tekke's soup kitchen opened its door to many migrants and people in need.
After Pîr İlyas the sheikhdom of the tekke passed again within the family to Abdurrahman Çelebi (d. 827/1424), and then family members such as Gümüşlüzâde Celâl Çelebi, Sofu Üveys Çelebi, and Muhyiddin Mehmed Halvetî continued a chain of sheikhs extending to the eighteenth century. Abdurrahman Çelebi, who also served as mufti in Amasya and wrote poems under the pen name "Hüsâmî," was called "Pîrzâde" because he descended from Pîr İlyas. Thus, with the grandsons of Ahmed Bey, the family traced a line extending from emirate and financial posts to Sufi and scholarly life.
No information was found in other sources on Ahmed Bey himself. That Hüsameddin gives the date of death with "is thought" shows that this date too is a conjecture drawn from a document.
