In Modern English

He is the son of Sirâceddîn Mûsâ Çelebi, one of the sheikhs of Amasya; Mûsâ Çelebi was the son of Ahmed, who was the son of Şu'ayb. He studied in Amasya, gave public lectures, and became known as "Şeyh Sarâcoğlu." He died after 741 [1340-41]. That he was among the great scholars was also seen in official documents.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • meşâyih: sheikhs, elders of a Sufi order
  • tahsîl-i ulûm: study of the sciences, education
  • ders-i âm: a lesson given in a mosque open to everyone; the scholar who gave it was called a "dersiâm"
  • benâm olmak: to gain fame, to become known by name
  • kibâr-ı ulemâ: great, leading scholars
  • evrâk-ı resmiyye: official documents

What Is Known of Him

No information on this person was found in other sources. Hüsameddin himself does not know the date of death exactly and is content to say "after 741," and he bases his information on official documents in which he saw the name. These records are most probably waqf deeds, hüccets, or court documents; in other entries too the author derives people's dates of death from the date of documents in which their names appear as witness or party. The phrase "after 741" also suggests that the latest document in which his name appears is dated 741.

The epithet "Sarâcoğlu" suggests that one branch of the family may have been engaged in saddlery, that is, the making of saddles and harness; but this is only a conjecture drawn from the meaning of the name. Hüsameddin says nothing about the family's occupation.

A point that should draw the reader's attention is the entry "Ahmed Çelebi-Mevlânâ eş-Şeyh Şemseddîn," which comes a few pages later. The person in that entry is also an Ahmed Çelebi with the epithet Şemseddîn, and his father is also an Amasya sheikh named Mûsâ Çelebi; he is called "Şeyhoğlu," and his date of death is given as 771 [1369-70]. Hüsameddin wrote the two persons separately; whether there was a kinship between them, or whether a single person was split into two entries on the basis of information from two separate documents, cannot be determined with the sources at hand.
