In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of the mîr-livâ Mustafa Bey, son of Gürcü Ali Bey, one of the notables of Amasya. While a zeamet holder he rose upon his father's death. Later he attached himself to İbşir Pasha and, during his grand vizierate, became sanjak bey of Eskişehir.

When İbşir Pasha was done away with in Receb 1066, he came to Amasya as one dismissed from office and lived there as one fallen from favor. For this reason, in 1068 he followed Abaza Hasan Pasha and, together with many of his friends, was executed during the Aleppo affair; his goods and property were confiscated.

İbşir Pasha and Eskişehir

İbşir Mustafa Pasha was of Abaza origin and acted in close cooperation with Abaza Hasan. While governor of Sivas, angered that Katırcıoğlu Mehmed Pasha had been made serdar against Abaza, he went over to Abaza's side. The two entered Ankara and Eskişehir together and had the notables of both places killed. Later the matter was calmed by giving him the governorship of Aleppo and Abaza the post of agha of the Turkmens. When İbşir Pasha became grand vizier at the end of 1654, he placed persons he trusted in important posts; Hüsameddin says that Gürcüzâde Ahmed Bey's appointment as sanjak bey of Eskişehir also took place during this grand vizierate. The grand vizierate lasted only a few months; he was executed on 5 Receb 1065 (11 May 1655).

Hüsameddin's giving İbşir's death as Receb 1066 differs by one year from the date 1065 in the TDV. It is also possible that Gürcüzâde Ahmed Bey's arrival in Amasya was a year later, in 1066; but the text does not distinguish this explicitly.

The End in Aleppo

Abaza Hasan's revolt of 1658 led him and the senior officials around him to Aleppo. Abaza and those with him withdrew to Aleppo on the promise that they would be pardoned; at the end of Cemâziyelevvel 1069 (16-17 February 1659) they were seized through a plot and killed, and their property passed to the state treasury. This is the event Hüsameddin calls "the Aleppo affair". Hüsameddin's giving the year 1068 is the date of joining the uprising; their deaths fall in 1069.

In Other Sources

No information was found in other sources about Gürcü Ali Bey and his sons. The entry "Gürcü Mehmed Paşa" in the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi concerns a different person, the Gürcü Mehmed Pasha who became grand vizier; Hüsameddin's epithet "Gürcüzâde" could not be linked with this person.
