He was from Ladik. He was the son of es-Seyyid eş-Şeyh Ali Efendi, son of es-Seyyid Mehmed Efendi, son of es-Seyyid Nureddin Çelebi, sheikh and steward (mütevelli) of the Rifâî lodge, one of the descendants of the saint es-Seyyid Ahmed Kebîrü'r-Rifâî. He was born in the year 1114 [1702-03] in which his grandfather es-Seyyid Mehmed Efendi died. When his uncle es-Seyyid eş-Şeyh Nureddin Efendi, son of es-Seyyid Mehmed Efendi, died in 1158 [1745], his father became sheikh and steward.

After his father's death he became sheikh of his grandfather's lodge and steward of its waqf, and in 1188 [1774-75], fleeing the oppression of Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha, he went to Istanbul. In 1194 [1780] he went to the Hejaz, and on his return, through the guidance and introduction of his cousin, the Ladik-born es-Seyyid Abdullah Ağa, the ağa of the turban (tülbend ağası), he entered the presence of Abdülhamid I.

He gained the favor of the said sultan and died in the middle of 1197 [1783]. He is buried at Eğrikapı in Istanbul. He was a respected old man among the learned sheikhs. His son is es-Seyyid el-Hâc Mustafa Efendi; his brother is also es-Seyyid el-Hâc Mustafa Efendi.

The Rifâî Lodge at Ladik

Rifâîism is the order named after Ahmed er-Rifâî (1118-1182). Er-Rifâî was born in the region between Baghdad and Basra, was known as a seyyid descended from Imam Husayn, and died near Wâsit on 23 September 1182; the sources write that thousands of people came to his lodge every day and that food was served morning and evening. There is also a lodge (zaviye) bearing his name at Ladik. A study on Ladik records that the Seyyid Ahmed Kebir Lodge and the Mescid-i Şerif Waqf in the Zaviye Quarter of the district were placed under state administration in 1888 on the grounds of the closure of dervish lodges and zaviyes; in the record, Mustafa Efendi, son of Abdullah, appears as steward of the waqf. The same study argues that Seyyid Küçek Ahmed er-Rufâî, whose tomb is at Ladik, may have been a son, grandson, or deputy (halife) of the founder of the order, that is, that he should be regarded as the beginning of the Rifâî branch in Anatolia; there is no definite document on this.

Hüsameddin's record shows that sheikhs from this family were still at the head of the lodge and the waqf at the end of the eighteenth century. Ali Efendi's going to Istanbul under the pressure of Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha is consistent with the information that the Canikli family pressed many leading men around Amasya; the pasha had held the sanjak of Amasya as a life-tenure grant (mâlikâne) since 1772. No information was found in other sources on Ali Efendi's meeting with Abdülhamid I and his burial at Eğrikapı in Istanbul.
