The Ayâs Ağa Madrasa

The Ayâs Ağa Madrasa, of which he was professor, is part of the complex that Ayas Ağa built in the Şamlar quarter of Amasya together with a mosque and a primary school; Hüsameddin reports that the complex was built in 900 [1494-95]. The madrasa is also called Medrese-i Ayasiyye, Küçük Kapı Ağası and Küçük Ağa. It consists of nine cells enclosing the courtyard on the west and north and a section presumed to be the lecture room; in front of the cells runs a portico on marble columns. For the life of the Gate-Keeper Ayas Ağa, see entry 434.

The year 1047 [1637-38], when Hacı Müderris became professor at the madrasa, comes about a hundred and forty years after its founding. When the Amasya madrasas that gave instruction in the twentieth century are listed, "Küçük Ağa (Ayas Ağa)" is among them; that is, the madrasa went on providing education in much later centuries. Because Telli's study deals with the professors of the late period, Hacı Müderris's time lies outside its scope.

Teachers and Period

No information was found in the sources read on Kadızâde Küçük Mehmed and el-Hâc İsmâîl Efendi of Yağmurköy, named as Hacı Müderris's teachers. That a settlement called Yağmurköy exists in Amasya could likewise not be confirmed in the sources. Hüsameddin's sentence "in the meantime he also became professor at other madrasas" does not say at which madrasas Hacı Müderris served between 1047 and 1057. No other information is given about his son Mehmed Efendi.

Evliya Çelebi, who toured Amasya in the 17th century, records that ten madrasas and two hundred primary schools operated in the city. The years of Hacı Müderris's service fall in the same century as this observation.
