Notes and Research

  • ikmâl-i tahsîl: completing one's studies
  • ders-i âm: the authority and duty to give lectures open to all
  • kâdî-i kasabât ve bilâd: judge of the towns and districts
  • kibâr-ı ulemâ ve kudât: the great scholars and judges
  • tercüme: biographical notice, short biography

His Teacher Fahreddîn İlyâs

Fahreddîn İlyâs was the son of Cemâleddîn İbrâhim Aksarayî (d. 729 [1328]), who taught in Amasya, and lived in the 14th century. Emîr Hacı Şadgeldi Pasha, who ruled Amasya in the same period, also studied under him. Şadgeldi was emir of Amasya from 760 [1359] to 783 [1381-82] and was killed in a battle with Kadı Burhaneddin. The "Şâdi Bey" of the text may be a short form of this man's name, and the period fits, but the text does not say whom it means (inference). Doğan's death after 800 [1397-98] is a plausible interval for someone trained by this teacher; since Doğan's birth date is unknown, however, this too is an inference.

Not to Be Confused with Namesakes

In the same period Şerafeddin Doğan Şah, brother of Hacı Kutlu Şah, was lord of Turhal; he has nothing to do with the Doğan of the text and only shares the name. No information was found in the sources read on Bedreddîn Doğan himself, on his brother Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi or on his son Tâceddîn İbrâhim Çelebi. The death date after 800 given by Hüsameddin could therefore not be verified.
