The Halifet Gazi Madrasa

The "Halfet Gâzi" madrasa of which Hacı İbiş Efendi was professor in the last years of his life is the Halifet Gazi Madrasa, one of the oldest Turkish educational buildings in Amasya; among the people its name is also pronounced Hilfet Gazi. The building stands today in the provincial center, in the Şamice district on Torumtay Street, adjoining the tomb of the same name. According to its inscription it was built in 606 [1209-10]; the waqf deed of its founder, Halifet Gazi, dated 622 [1225], has also survived. Halifet Gazi was an emir who entered the service of the Seljuks after the fall of the Danishmend principality. He was appointed governor of Amasya in the time of Alâeddin Keykubad I (619/1222), fell as a martyr in the campaign against the Georgians in 1232, and was buried in his tomb in Amasya.

The madrasa continued its teaching throughout the Ottoman period. Müderris Hasan Efendi rebuilt in wood the parts that had collapsed in the earthquake of 1647, and in 1888 the Amasya mufti Hacı Osman Hilmi Efendi had the building thoroughly repaired. A study based on the archive of the Meşihat counts Halifet Gazi among the madrasas where lessons were given in Amasya in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Today the south wall and the eastern part of the madrasa partly stand. The date of professorship that Hüsameddin gives, that is, İbiş Efendi's appointment to this madrasa in 1214, is a small but valuable record showing that the building was still in use in those years.

Saz Village and the Sazlıoğulları

Saz village, from which the family took its name, must be today's Sazköy in the central district of Amasya. A study of the renamed settlements of Amasya lists Sazköy among the villages attached to the center and does not include it in the list of renamed villages; that is, the village has kept its old name. Whether the village lay within the borders of the Öz nahiye that Hüsameddin mentions could not be documented separately. No information was found on İbiş Efendi's teacher Fenercizâde Halîl Efendi or on the Sazlıoğulları family apart from Hüsameddin's book.
