In Modern English

He was from Sivas. He was the son of Seyyid Halîl Ağa, brother of Mumcuzâde Said İbrâhim Pasha, who had earlier served as mutasarrıf of Amasya. When his uncle was mutasarrıf of Amasya, he came with his father and settled in Amasya. Employed in state affairs, he became well known; he served as director in the kazas and afterward as district governor (kaymakam) of Merzifon. After being dismissed from his post he died in Amasya in 1293 [1876]. His son Seyyid Halîl Şem'î Efendi died in 1318 [1900] while accountant of waqfs in the province of Tripolitania.

A Family That Came Alongside a Mutasarrıf

The epithet "Karabüber" in the heading of the entry is not explained in the text; it appears to have remained the family's name in Amasya. According to Hüsameddin, the family settled in the city when the uncle, Mumcuzâde Said İbrâhim Pasha, came to Amasya as mutasarrıf. The nephew's entry into state service also took place in the shadow of this kinship; first came kaza directorships, then the district governorship of Merzifon. The text does not give the date of the uncle's governorship in Amasya.

No independent source on the lives of Mumcuzâde Said İbrâhim Pasha and his nephew could be reached. Since a list of the district governors of Merzifon for this period was also not found, it was not possible to compare İbrâhim Efendi's years as district governor with another document. No information was found on this person in other sources.

Tripolitania, given as the post of his son Halîl Şem'î Efendi, was a province attached to the Ottoman Empire in those years, in the territory of present-day Libya. That the second generation of a family raised in Amasya died at the other end of the empire while occupied with waqf accounts shows over how wide a geography the officials of the period moved.
