Lâdik and the Sanjak of Amasya

The place Hüsameddin calls Lâdik is today a district of Samsun. The name comes from the ancient city of Laodikeia Pontika, said to have been founded in the time of the Kingdom of Pontus. In the Ottoman period Lâdik was the seat of a kaza (district). Some sources introducing the region show the kaza as attached to the sanjak of Canik. According to the encyclopedia entry on the history of Amasya, however, at the beginning of the 16th century the sanjak of Amasya consisted of the central kaza of Amasya together with the kazas of Lâdik and Merzifon; in 1576-77 the number of kazas rose to seven, and Simre-i Lâdik was among them along with Lâdik. At the end of the 19th century Lâdik was one of the eight kazas of the sanjak of Amasya, which was attached to the province of Sivas. The reason for this difference between the sources could not be determined; Hüsameddin's book, for its part, lists scholars from Lâdik among the scholars of Amasya.

Lâdik is known as a place that produced scholars. Mehmed Efendi, the imam of the sultan and one of the well-known names of the Ottoman scholarly class, was born in the 17th century in the kaza of Lâdik, which was then attached to the sanjak of Amasya; he stood out for his mastery of Quranic recitation and his fine voice, and he worked for a time as a müderris.

Today the district belongs to Samsun, and during the Turkification of the region it came under Seljuk and Danishmend rule. In the district centre the Alibey Mansion (Ladik Culture House) and the tombs of Sunullah Pasha, Dikilitaş and Seyit Ahmet-i Kebir are among the cultural assets still mentioned today.

Tekke, Waqf and the Order of the Sheikhship

The most striking point in the entry is that the tekke was run through two separate offices: the sheikhship and the custodianship. İshak Efendi became sheikh in place of his father in 1135 [1722-23], while the custodianship passed to him only after the death of his uncle Mustafa Efendi in 1137 [1724-25]. In other words, while the office of sheikh passed from father to son, the administration of the waqf stayed with the uncle. After İshak Efendi's death the two offices were again divided between two brothers: Hasan Efendi ran the waqf and Mehmed Efendi ran the tekke.

A study of the zawiyas of Amasya, based on the hurufat records in the archive of the General Directorate of Foundations, counts Lâdik among the kazas in rural Amasya where zawiyas were most numerous. According to the same study, most zawiyas had a waqf and were kept running on its revenues; their administration remained with dynasties of sheikhs or custodians descended from the founder. No detail could be found in the sources read about the founding of the Seyyid Hüseyin Efendi Tekke, its present condition or the revenues of its waqf. Likewise, the location and founder of the Şeyhülislam Madrasa in Lâdik mentioned by Hüsameddin could not be verified.

The dates are consistent with one another: İshak Efendi became sheikh in 1135, custodian in 1137 and died in 1150, which means he held the sheikhship for about fifteen years and the custodianship for thirteen. Hüsameddin does not give the years of his service as mufti and müderris; he says only "for a time".
