In Modern English
He was a native of Amasya, the son of the judge (kadı) Mehmed Efendi. After finishing his studies he taught in Amasya for a time and became a ders-i âm (a müderris authorized to give public lessons). He then took up the career of judge and deputy judge and toured towns and cities; in 1137 [1724-25] he is recorded as a member of the council of notables.
He later advanced and was appointed judge of sanjaks. He retired in 1148 [1735-36], and it was found in the "Retirement Register" that he died in 1150 [1737-38]. He was a well-known judge, a scholar and a mature man.

What the Text Tells Us
Hüsameddin describes this man's life in three steps: teaching in Amasya, touring for judicial and deputy posts, and finally rising to sanjak judgeships. The places and dates of the judgeships are not given. He entered the council of notables in 1137, so he is recorded during the years in which the notables had influence in Amasya's administration. Hüsameddin takes the date of death not from the family or a local record but from an official one, the "Retirement Register"; the archive and the years the register covers are not stated.
The dispute among the Amasya notables mentioned in entries 165 and 166 of the same volume falls between 1139 and 1143. The text does not say that İsmâil Efendi took part in these events; apart from his membership in the council, no relation to the notables is reported.
What Could Not Be Found
Two searches for Nâibzâde İsmâil Efendi and his father, the judge Mehmed Efendi, produced no record of either man. Abstracts of theses and articles on Amasya's court registers were found, among them a master's thesis on the sanjak of Amasya in the seventeenth century drawn from the mühimme registers (İlknur Usta, Ondokuz Mayıs University, 2019) and a study of register no. 62 for 1785-1787; neither belongs to İsmâil Efendi's period (1720s-1740s) or mentions him in its abstract. The entry in the "Retirement Register" could not be verified. No information on this person was found in other sources.
