In Modern English
He was a native of Diyarbekir, the son of Ali. He studied there and came to Amasya. Here he completed his studies under İkincizâde Abdullah Sânî Efendi, became a müderris giving public lessons, and gained renown among the scholars and the notables.
Since he attached himself to Bekir Beyzâde Osman Bey during the latter's time as baş a'yân, he became müderris of the Abdullah Pasha Madrasa in 1136 [1723-24]. But he stayed in this post for about a year and left the madrasa in 1137 [1724-25].
Since he attached himself in 1139 [1726-27] to the baş a'yân Helvacı Hacı İsmail Ağa, he became müderris of the Mehmed Pasha Madrasa in 1142 [1729-30]; but when it was found that he had been involved in the İmaret Arkası affair, he was sent to Diyarbekir in 1143 [1730-31].
Pardoned in 1145 [1732-33], he came to Amasya and died in 1148 [1735-36]. He was a scholar and a jurist. Because he greatly desired the muftiship, he mixed much with the notables and twice came under investigation. He was a preacher of powerful speech who mixed easily with people. His children were called the Kara İsmailoğulları.

His Place in the Quarrel of the Notables
İsmâil Efendi's life in this entry is bound up with the quarrel among the notables of Amasya. According to the text he first attached himself to the baş a'yân Bekir Beyzâde Osman Bey, then to Helvacı Hacı İsmail Ağa, who became baş a'yân in 1139; his madrasa posts changed with these loyalties. His service as müderris at the Abdullah Pasha and Mehmed Pasha madrasas between 1136 and 1142 can be read as an example of the bond between the notables and madrasa posts. His being sent to Diyarbekir in 1143 coincides with the period when Helvacı İsmail Ağa was also sent to Diyarbekir in the same year, in entry 165. It is likely that the "İmaret Arkası affair" is the same event as the bloody quarrel described in entry 165; but the text does not say so explicitly. Which imaret the name refers to could not be found in the sources. Since the Mehmed Pasha complex in Amasya also had an imaret, one might think the event took place around that building; this is only a possibility and could not be verified.
The Abdullah Pasha and Mehmed Pasha Madrasas
The post of "müderris of Abdullah Pasha" in the text most probably concerns the Abdullah Pasha (Dârülhadis, Sofular) Mosque in the Sofular quarter; no other Amasya building of this name turned up in the sources read. It was built as a mosque and hadith madrasa by Beylerbeyi Hacısinanbeyzâde Abdullah Pasha (d. 1490-91), one of the notables of Bayezid II's time, its waqf deed was drawn up in 1501-1502, and famous hadith scholars taught there throughout the Ottoman period. Today it is used only as a mosque.
The Mehmed Pasha Complex stands on the bank of the Yeşilırmak, in the Mehmed Paşa quarter. Its founder was Hızır Paşazâde Mehmed Pasha (d. 1495), vizier of Bayezid II and tutor (lala) of Prince Ahmed; according to the inscription of the mosque its construction was completed in January 1486. The complex consisted of a mosque, madrasa, imaret, tomb, guest wing, lodge, fountain and cemetery; only the mosque, the wing rooms attached to it and the tomb have reached the present. The mosque and tomb, which collapsed in the 1939 earthquake, were repaired by the General Directorate of Foundations. The madrasa of the complex has not survived.
