In Modern English
He is from Çorum. He is the son of Dâmâdoğlu Mustafa Efendi, son of Ahmed. He came to Amasya, completed his studies with Iydîzâde Hacı Mustafa Âkif Efendi and received the licence to teach. During his studies he also benefited from Hâce Laz İbrâhim, from the Mufti of Çorum Seyyid Hacı Ali, and from Müftüzâde Hacı Mehmed Efendi, the şeyhülimâre.
A famous teacher giving lessons open to all, he married the daughter of Hâfız Seyyid Mehmed Ağa, mütevelli of the Şâh Bula Hatun Foundation. In 1163 [1749-50] he became the first professor of the Sungurlu Madrasa, which Sungurlu Hacı Mehmed Ağa had built in Amasya, and because he won renown for his scholarly excellence he became Mufti of Amasya on the fourteenth of Safer 1184 [1770-71].
Dismissed in Zilhicce 1186 [1772-73], he became Mufti of Amasya a second time on the fifteenth of Muharram 1189 [1775-76]. He kept the post for two years and was dismissed at the end of Muharram 1191 [1777-78]. Three Terms as Mufti
Hüsameddin shows Hâtif Efendi as mufti of Amasya in three separate periods: Safer 1184, Muharram 1189 and Muharram 1198. The first date falls on the same day as the resignation date in the entry on İsmâil Efendi (Şeyh Müftîzâde); the second coincides with the fifteenth of Muharram 1189, the day İsmâil Kâmil Efendi was dismissed. Reading these three entries of Hüsameddin side by side, one sees that the office of mufti changed hands in Amasya at short intervals, with a dismissal and an appointment made on the same day. The details are not in the text; no other source was found on the background of the events.
Pupils of the Same Teachers
Iydîzâde Mustafa Âkif Efendi, one of Hâtif Efendi's teachers, is the father of İsmâil Kâmil Efendi and the teacher of Şeyh Müftîzâde İsmâil Efendi; Müftüzâde Hacı Mehmed Efendi was also the teacher of Hacıköylüzâde İsmâil Efendi. Several muftis and scholars named in consecutive entries thus appear to have been trained in the same circle. This information rests only on Hüsameddin's own records.
The Madrasas of Amasya
More than 40 madrasas have been identified in Amasya. No information was found in other sources on the Sungurlu Madrasa that Hüsameddin names for Hâtif Efendi or on Sungurlu Hacı Mehmed Ağa who built it. The founding of the Şâh Bula Hatun Foundation and the descent of its mütevellis could not be verified either; the text lists the transfer of the trusteeship from the father-in-law to his grandsons between 1192 and 1247, but it could not be compared with another record.
