The Mosque of Sultan Bayezid

The mosque where he served as imam stands at the centre of the complex that Bayezid II built on the bank of the Yeşilırmak in Amasya. According to its three-part building inscription, the mosque was completed in Receb 891 [July 1486]. Hüsameddin, however, claims that construction began right after Bayezid's accession, in Receb 886 [1481]. The mosque lies at the middle of the complex, with the madrasa on its right and the soup kitchen (imaret) and infirmary (tabhâne) on its left. The elementary school near the soup kitchen has not survived.

In the years when Seyyid İsmâil Efendi became imam, in 1197 [1782-83], a benefactor named Hacı Ali Ağa had taps and a water-heating room built on the river side of the mosque so that ablutions could be made with hot water in winter. According to Hüsameddin, the professorship of the complex's madrasa was given to the muftis of Amasya, and its first teacher was the renowned şeyhülislam Zenbilli Ali Efendi. The text shows that both his father and he served as imam in the same mosque; his grandfather is called "Emîr İmam." The exact meaning of this title, and any other record of the family, could not be found.
