Köprü and the Taşanoğulları
Köprü, Ahmed Bey's home town, is today's Vezirköprü in Samsun; in old records it also appears under the name Kedağra (Kedeğra). In the fourteenth century, with the dissolution of the Seljuk order, many small principalities arose in and around Samsun; of these the Taşanoğulları held the region between Vezirköprü and Havza. The Taşanoğulları Principality was joined to Ottoman lands in the time of Murad II (1421-1451).
Hüsameddin tells the history of this family in detail elsewhere in his work. The family's ancestor, Emîr Celâleddîn Taşan Bey, dominated the regions of Kedağra, Havza and Merzifon, and the Taşan Mountain in the region is called by his name. His grandson Taşan Bey took the emirate of Kedağra on the death of his uncle Umur Bey, kept his place by remaining subject to Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha, ruler of Amasya, and died after 783 [1381]; his son is Ahmed Bey. It is very probable that this Ahmed Bey is the Ahmed Bey in the chain "Emir of Köprü Hasan Bey bin Ahmed Bey" in the article, that is, that the subject of the article is the grandson's son of Taşan Bey; but Hüsameddin does not make this link explicit.
The family's attachment to the Ottomans was not easy. According to Hüsameddin's account, in 828 [1424-25] Taşanoğlu Haydar Bey, who sat in the fortress known as "Koca Kayası" at Köprü, trusting in the strength of the fortress and the abundance of its provisions, did not submit to Yörgüç Pasha, beylerbeyi of Rum. Yörgüç Pasha won over Haydar Bey's son Kâsım Bey and his adviser Tayfur Bey, took the fortress by war, sent Haydar Bey to Amasya and gave zeamets to Kâsım and Tayfur Beys. In Yörgüç Pasha's biography too it is recorded that Haydar Bey, lord of Kocakayası, was brought to obedience. That Ahmed Bey, the subject of the article, began as a zeamet holder and then rose to beylik shows that after this submission the family took its place within the Ottoman system of revenue grants.
Kaya Paşazâde Ahmed Bey
The second Ahmed Bey named at the end of the article belongs to another old family of Amasya, the Kaya Paşazâdes. Hüsameddin ties this family to Beylerbeyi Seyfeddîn Torumtay, who ruled Amasya in the Seljuk period, and calls Kaya Pasha "Torumtayoğlu". According to another record in the same place, Kaya Pasha's son Durak Bey, one of the well-known beys of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and Murad II, died after 831 [1427-28]; Durak Çelebi, son of Durmuş Bey, son of Durak Bey, became mütevelli of the Torumtay and Kaya Pasha Bath waqfs. Comparing these records, it is very probable that in the chain given in the article as "Durmuş Bey bin Kaya Pasha" the generation of Durak Bey has been skipped; in that case Ahmed Bey is not Kaya Pasha's son but his grandson's son and the brother of Durak Çelebi. That the family held the trusteeship of the Torumtay and Kaya Pasha waqfs for centuries is clear from the fact that even in the seventeenth century the name of "Kaya Paşazâde Dursun Bey, mütevelli of Torumtay" appears.
No information about either Ahmed Bey was found in sources other than Hüsameddin.
