In Modern English

He was the son of Fazlızâde Hacı Seyyid Mehmed Sa'id Efendi, one of the notables of the Kocacık quarter; Mehmed Sa'id Efendi was the son of Seyyid Hacı Abdülkadir Efendi, who was the son of Seyyid Hacı Mustafa Efendi, son of Hacı Ahmed Efendi, son of Mustafa Efendi, son of Hacı Ahmed Efendi, son of Fazlullah Efendi.

After his father's death at Anadolu Kavağı in Istanbul in Zilkade 1233 [1817-18], he learned the craft of the scribe and became a clerk of the market inspectorate (ihtisab), and treasury steward. In 1249 [1833-34] he became a member of the council, in 1251 [1835-36] the deputy of the head of the sayyids (nakîbüleşraf kaymakamı), and in 1253 [1837-38] hâcıbaşı. For many years he was known by this title as hâcıbaşı.

In 1263 [1846-47] he became the kethüda of the door and the manager of affairs of Seyyid Sa'id İbrahim Pasha, mutasarrıf of Amasya, and likewise of the mutasarrıfs who came after him; for about seventeen years he governed the Sanjak of Amasya well and joined the class of hâcegân of the imperial council. In 1279 [1862-63] he died in a fortunate condition.

He was a household well informed in learning, familiar with administration, influential, mild in temper, wise, prudent, a trusted counsellor and a door to which all turned. His sons Seyyid Mehmed Sa'id and Ali Efendi did not take after him. He wasted his fortune. Sa'id Ağa retired from the post of police sergeant and died in 1315 [1897-98]. His sons Mustafa and Abdullah Efendi did not live. Seyyid Ali Efendi, who was a district director (nâhiye müdürü), died around 1318 [1900-01]. His son, Seyyid Ahmed Nehrî Bey, one of the customs directors of Istanbul, is living.

The Deputy Headship of the Sayyids

The nakîbüleşraf was the official at the head of the sayyids and sharifs, the descendants of the Prophet. He lived in Istanbul, while in other cities there were deputies (kaymakams) of the nakîbüleşraf chosen for a fixed period from among the sayyids. Because this deputyship was considered an important source of influence and income, it was generally given to men from influential families. The genealogies of sayyids and sharifs were recorded; these records were the source consulted in granting the sayyid's diploma, in applying exemptions from military service and extraordinary taxes, and in lineage disputes. According to Hüsameddin, Ahmed Efendi held this post as deputy in 1251 (1835-36). That the Fazlızâde family bore the title of sayyid and that he was appointed to this post are consistent with each other.

Steward of the Governors

That Ahmed Efendi stayed for seventeen years as steward and manager of affairs in the household of successive mutasarrıfs shows the continuity of a man with local knowledge while the serving administrators changed. According to the text, this work carried real weight in the administration of the Sanjak of Amasya. No detail could be found in the searches made on the mutasarrıf Seyyid Sa'id İbrahim Pasha or on the other pashas in this post. The text does not say clearly who wasted the fortune; from the sentence it appears that either the father or the sons may be meant.

The Family
