From Dersiâm to Town Kadı
The path of the two kadıs in the entry is the one followed by many scholars trained in the madrasas of Amasya. A dersiâm was a müderris who, after receiving an icazet from a madrasa and passing a separate examination, gained the authority to give public lectures in mosque and madrasa. The spread of the word as a title falls in the seventeenth century; that is, these two Ahmed Efendis lived in a period when the term had only recently become established. Ottoman kadiships, for their part, were divided into two: the "mevleviyet" kadiships of the large cities and the remaining "kazâ" or town kadiships. What Hüsameddin calls "devr-i kasabât" is making the rounds, in short-term appointments, of the small districts in this second group. The great majority of those trained in provincial madrasas spent their careers in these kadiships.
The Kâsım Bey Madrasa of Hakala
Hakala, where Gelgiraslı Ahmed Efendi taught, is today the village of Yolpınar in the Suluova district; in old records it appears under names such as Hakala and Kağala and for a long time was the seat of a nahiye. The Kâsım Bey Madrasa in the village was built in the fifteenth century by Kâsım Bey; local records give its year of construction as 1464 and count the madrasa among the large madrasas of Amasya called the "forties." The madrasa stands today as a registered monument in the village center. That one became müderris in a village madrasa and from there moved to a kadiship shows that the scholarly circle of Amasya extended beyond the city walls to towns and villages.
Gelgiras
Gelgiras, Ahmed Efendi's nisbe, is most likely the village of Karşıyaka in the Merzifon district today. The village's name appears as Gelgiras or Gelgeras in the records of 1876 and 1928; it then took the name Çatalkaya, and in 2008 became Karşıyaka. No record other than the information Hüsameddin gives was found concerning Zileli Ahmed Efendi.
