In Modern English

He was from Merzifon. He was the son of Tuz Mehmed Pasha. On the twenty-sixth day of Safer 1181 [23 July 1767] he became mutasarrıf of Amasya. Since he himself was guardian of Van, the chief notable Gürcüzade Halil Bey became his mütesellim.

In Rebiülevvel, with the dismissal of Hacı Servahdî Efendi, the former mufti Hacı Abdurrahman Efendi became mufti of Amasya. In Rebiülahir Köprülü Topaloğlu Osman Ağa son of Ahmed Ağa rose from the kul kethüdalık to the janissary ağalık.

At the beginning of Zilkade Küçük Hafız Mehmed Efendi of Amasya, one of the müderrises of Istanbul, became kadı of Amasya, and Hacı Servahdî Mustafa Efendi became his naib. At the end of the month the hacıbaşı Göztaşoğlu Hacı Ali Ağa died; Hacı Mehmed Efendi, müderris of the Hızır Pasha Madrasa, Ebubekir Pasha, who had returned from the war, and his son, the teşrifatçı Akif Mehmed Bey, also died.

In the examination held for the müderrisship of Hızır Pasha, Ürgüplü Ahmed Efendi won first place among the scholars who gave general lessons in mosques and so became müderris. He had won the approval of the deeply learned Seküköylüoğlu Kâşif Mehmed Efendi, who examined him, and of the worthy scholar Çelebizade Hacı Hüseyin Efendi.

In Muharrem 1182 [May-June 1768] Iydîzade Hafız Mehmed Efendi, kethüda of the tradesmen and of the bedesten, became chief notable; Gürcüzade Halil Bey went to the war zone with a retinue of five hundred persons. Yenicelioğlu Hacı Mehmed Ağa became mütesellim of Amasya. In Safer Avkatlızade Mustafa Pasha became governor of Sivas. In Rebiülevvel, however, the mutasarrıf of Amasya fell captive to the Russians.

Tuz Mehmed Pasha and a Family of Merzifon

Tuz Mehmed Pasha, mentioned as Ahmed Pasha's father, according to biographical records based on Mehmed Süreyya's Sicill-i Osmânî, rose from among the beys and from 1728 held the beylerbeyiliks of Kars, Van, Niğde and again Kars. In 1739, in return for the bravery he showed at Vidin, he was given the governorship of Diyarbekir with the rank of vizier, in the same year became seraskeri of the Vidin front, and was executed on 16 August 1739. The same source records that he was brave and zealous, that his son was Ahmed Pasha and his brother Silahşor Hasan Bey. This similarity between the father's beylerbeyilik of Van and the son's guardianship of Van is striking.

The family's root in Merzifon can be traced from the personalities section of Hüsameddin's book. There it is written that Kasabzade Hacı Halil Ağa of Merzifon was kapıcılar kethüdası of Grand Vizier Merzifonlu Hacı Ali Pasha, after the Russian campaign of 1122 [1710] became the mültezim and then the voivode of the Merzifon mukataa, in 1124 built a mosque in the Tuz Pazarı quarter where he lived and died in 1132, and that his sons were Tuz Mehmed Pasha and Hacı Mustafa Ağa. Accordingly, Ahmed Pasha is the third generation of a voivode family that rose from the Tuz Pazarı of Merzifon; it is plausible that his father's nickname is also related to this quarter, but no record was found stating this explicitly.

A Note on Dates

A recent study based on the tahvil (appointment) registers in the archive shows that in these years the sanjak of Amasya was given to Goniyeli Abaza Mehmed Pasha on 22 Safer 1181 [20 July 1767] and the same Pasha was transferred to the sanjak of Ankara on 13 Rebiülevvel 1182 [28 July 1768]. The date 26 Safer 1181 that Hüsameddin gives for Ahmed Pasha and the date 13 Rebiülevvel 1182 that he gives in the next entry for Hidâyet Pasha's appointment coincide with these records almost to the day; but the name of the pasha who received the sanjak is different. The reason for this discrepancy could not be explained with the sources at hand.

Another point the reader should note is the war records at the end of the entry. The Ottoman state declared war on Russia in the autumn of 1768. Hüsameddin, however, places Gürcüzade Halil Bey's going to the front with five hundred men in Muharrem 1182 [May-June 1768], and the mutasarrıf of Amasya's falling captive to the Russians in Rebiülevvel 1182 [July-August 1768], that is, before the declaration of war. These records must rest either on war preparations and events along the frontier or on a shift of dates in his source; which of the two cannot be said with certainty.

The Hızır Pasha Madrasa and Kâşif Mehmed Efendi

The Hızır Pasha Madrasa, where the müderris examination took place, belongs to the waqfs founded in 870 [1465] by Hızır Pasha, brother of Yörgüç Pasha. According to a study on waqf records, Hızır Pasha had a madrasa and a mosque built, set the posts of müderris, muid and so on in his waqf deed, and stipulated additional payment for those serving in the madrasa built by his brother. The waqf's revenues came from fields, vineyards, two hans and a bath in Suluova, Doğantepe, Lâdik and the center of Amasya; according to the accounting records, the waqf continued to exist until the Republican period. The examination Hüsameddin describes is valuable for showing that the müderris of this madrasa was chosen by competition and by the vote of scholars.

Seküköylüoğlu Kâşif Mehmed Efendi, who conducted the examination, would become mufti of Amasya a few years later and in 1188 [1774] would be hanged at Bafra for conveying the people's complaint to Istanbul against the pressures of Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha (see entry 62). In the scholars' section of Hüsameddin it is noted that he trained many students and that some of the scholars of Amasya took lessons "from Seküköylüzade Hacı Mehmed Kâşif Efendi".

No information was found in other sources on Topaloğlu Osman Ağa, Iydîzade Hafız Mehmed Efendi and Ürgüplü Ahmed Efendi named in the entry.
