A Family of Judges

The nickname "Kadızâde" in the entry's heading means "son of a judge" rather than being a family name. Hüsameddin uses this nickname for many people whose fathers were judges; therefore persons called by the same nickname are not relatives of one another. Indeed, in the book, in the entry of Ebu'l-Kâsım Ahmed Çelebi, son of the judge Ziyâeddîn Mes'ûd, who lived in the ninth [fifteenth] century, another Alâeddîn Ali Çelebi is mentioned who had a mescit built in the Kurşunlu neighborhood. The Alâeddîn Ali Çelebi, son of Ebûbekir Efendi in this entry, is a different person who lived about a century and a half after him.

Ebûbekir Efendi's life fits fully the scholarly order of the age of Süleyman the Lawgiver. In this period the passage from professorship to the judgeship was tied to a system called mülâzemet, and this system matured with new rules during Ebussuud Efendi's tenure as kazasker and şeyhülislam. The hierarchy of the madrasas was also rearranged, and the Süleymaniye madrasas were placed above the Sahn madrasas. Ebûbekir Efendi, who after teaching in a madrasa in Amasya passed to the path of the judgeship and died after serving in many cities, is a typical example of the scholars who were trained in the provinces and rose within this order.

No information was found in other sources on Ebûbekir Efendi, on his father Abdülhayy Efendi, or on his son Alâeddîn Ali Çelebi.
