Hâfız Ali Pasha's Term as Kapudan Pasha

That his father Hâfız Ali Pasha was kapudan pasha is also recorded in Mehmed İzzet's work on the kapudan pashas; because the work does not mention Halil Pasha or the title Seyyid, the genealogy could not be verified from this source. The work says that he was from the people of Amasya, that he became kapıcıbaşı while serving certain viziers, that he carried out the Ergani Mine trusteeship in Istanbul, and that on the death of the treasurer's son he became governor of Trabzon with the rank of vizier. In the month of Cemâziyelâhir 1225 [summer 1810] he became kapudan pasha in place of Çarkacı Ali Pasha. He sailed with the fleet into the Black Sea and one night put into the harbor of Olita; about a year later he was dismissed and transferred to the province of Vidin. Kara Mehmed Pasha then became kapudan pasha. This information agrees with Hüsameddin's record "former kapudan pasha." His name does not appear in some compilations listing the kapudan pashas; this may result from his short term not having entered the records.

The kapudan pasha was at first counted as sanjak bey of Gallipoli and later rose to the rank of beylerbey; from the eighteenth century the name "kapudân-ı deryâ" became common. The title was abolished in 1867 with the establishment of the Ministry of the Navy.

The work also recounts the road to his dismissal: according to its author, Hâfız Ali Pasha, in the hope of taking over the influential position of the late Küçük Hüseyin Pasha, went after prestige and closeness to the sultan, and for this reason was dismissed in the twelfth month. His predecessor Çarkacı Ali Pasha, while slave and treasurer to the Egyptian bey Elfî, had drawn close to Yusuf Ziya Pasha, who came to Egypt with the Ottoman army, had come to Istanbul and become kapudan pasha. After him Kara Mehmed Pasha, steward of Küçük Hüseyin Pasha, became kapudan in Şevval 1226, and two months later, in Zilhicce, died of a feverish illness. Küçük Hüseyin Pasha had been kapudan pasha between 1792 and 1803.

The Son's Career

İbrâhim Bey's first stop is the grand vizier's correspondence office. The correspondence office is one of the Porte bureaus that ran the grand vizier's correspondence. After his father's death in 1247 [1831-32] he became door steward to certain viziers. The door steward is the private assistant of governors and beylerbeys, residing in Istanbul, who followed developments at the Porte and informed them. Whether this work, which İbrâhim Bey carried on until 1268 [1851-52], rested on the ties his father had built with the navy and the viziers is not stated in the source.

On the Name and Descent

What the epithet "Gürcüzâde" in the title of the entry rests on is not explained in Hüsameddin's text. He traces the family line to Hacı İbrâhim Bey, Mustafa Pasha and Halil Pasha. No further information was found in the sources read on these members of the family.

What Could Not Be Read

No information was found in other sources on Seyyid Halil Pasha, Mustafa Pasha and Hacı İbrâhim Bey. The names of the viziers for whom İbrâhim Bey served as door steward could not be determined because the text does not give them.
