The Sultan Bayezid Mosque
The mosque where Yeniceli Hâfız Mehmed Efendi was chief muezzin and his son imam and preacher is the center of the Bayezid II Complex, spread over a wide area. The complex is on the bank of the Yeşilırmak; in the middle are the mosque, on its right the madrasa, on its left the kitchen-imaret and the tabhane. According to the three-part inscription over the door, the mosque was completed in Receb 891 [July 1486]; its inscriptions were written by a calligrapher named Ali b. Mezîd. Hüsameddin claims that construction began in September 1481; according to what he reports, İdrîs-i Bitlisî states that the building was entrusted by Bayezid to Prince Ahmed. Its deed of endowment was written in the middle of Cemâziyelevvel 901 [January 1496], and the complex consisted of a mosque, imaret, madrasa and primary school. The building was greatly damaged in the earthquake of 999 [1590] and was repaired at once. In the earthquake of 1079 [1668-69] the domes fell, two minarets were bent, and the domes of the imaret and tabhane collapsed; its trustee Merzifonlu İbrâhim Ağa made good all the damage within a year. In 1197 [1782-83] Hacı Ali Ağa had faucets and a water-heating place built on the river side of the mosque so that ablutions could be made with warm water in winter; in later years a şadırvan, a sebil and a muvakkithane-library were added, and the building was damaged again in the 1939 earthquake.
The Abdullah Pasha Mosque and the Tradition of Recitation
Hâfız Yûsuf Efendi, from whom Yeniceli Abdullah Efendi learned the science of recitation, was imam of the Abdullah Pasha Mosque. This building in the Sofular quarter is also known as the Dârülhadis Mosque and the Sofular Mosque. It was built as a mosque and dârülhadis by Beylerbey Hacısinanbeyzâde Abdullah Pasha (d. 1490-91), one of the notables of Bayezid II's time, and its deed of endowment was drawn up in 907 [1501-02] by his son, the defterdar Abdülkerim Bey. In 1505 Abdülkerim Bey also added on the east side a dârülkurrâ, that is, a section where Qur'an reading and recitation were taught; this part has not survived. The building, where famous hadith scholars taught in the Ottoman period, is today in good repair and is used only as a mosque. Hâfız Yûsuf Efendi's serving as imam here with the title "Şeyhü'l-kurrâ" can be read as a duty that continued the building's tie with the science of recitation; however, no record of this person was found other than Hüsameddin.
The Teacher and the Community
Abdullah Efendi's teacher Iydîzâde Hacı Mustafa Akif Efendi is also the teacher of Edîb Mehmed Efendi in the previous entry: the phrase "studied with Iydîzâde Hacı Mustafa Akif Efendi, one of the scholars of Amasya" appears in both entries. That is, the two men were pupils of the same teacher. Edîb later went to Istanbul and entered a scribal career, while Abdullah Efendi remained in Amasya in mosque posts.
