In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Şeyh Mahmûd Efendi, who was the son of Uzun Müderris Mehmed Efendi, professor at the Hızır Paşa Madrasa. While his father was pulpit sheikh at the Mihrimâh Sultân Mosque in Üsküdar, he studied in Istanbul and gave public lectures. Because he became son-in-law to Gürcü Kenan Ağazâde Mirza Mustafa Efendi, steward of Hâce Ahmed Paşa of Amasya, he became a professor in 1118 [1706-07]; during his father-in-law's meşîhat he became tezkireci, and after completing the usual madrasa stages he became mulla of Salonica in 1143 [1730-31]. Although he retired in 1144 [1731-32], he died in 1147 [1734-35]. He was among the high-ranking members of the learned hierarchy.

The Hızır Paşa Family and Its Madrasa

The "Hızır Paşa Madrasa" in the entry belongs to the group of buildings known in Amasya by the name Hızır Paşa. Hızır Paşa is the brother of Yörgüç Paşa of the Atabeyzade family; his children are known as the "Hızır Paşazades." Among the surviving works of Amasya a Hızır Paşa Mosque dated to the fourteenth century is also counted; because this date is not easily reconciled with Hızır Paşa, father of Mehmed Paşa (d. 1495), whether it relates to the same person could not be verified. Hızır Paşa's son Mehmed Paşa was a vizier of Sultan Bayezid II and tutor of Prince Ahmed; he had the Mehmed Paşa Complex built in Amasya. According to the inscription, the construction of the mosque was completed in Muharram 891 (January 1486). The complex consisted of a mosque, madrasa, imaret, tomb, tabhâne, zawiya, fountain and cemetery; today only the mosque, wing spaces that were probably the tabhâne, and the tomb survive. In front of the door of the tomb are three graves in a row; the first belongs to Hızır Paşa, father of Mehmed Paşa, and the second to Mehmed Paşa. The madrasa and imaret burned down. According to a record based on Hüsameddin, a tekke was also built south of the mosque, beside the road, in the name of Habib Karamânî, one of the Halvetî sheikhs, in 890 (1485). The mosque's marble minbar, with relief rûmî and arabesque ornament covering its surface, is described as a work of art; the mosque and tomb were damaged in the 1939 earthquake and repaired by the General Directorate of Foundations.

Whether the madrasa in which Uzun Müderris Mehmed Efendi taught was attached to the Hızır Paşa Mosque or to the madrasa of the Mehmed Paşa Complex could not be verified in the sources. It is known that the madrasa of the Mehmed Paşa Complex burned down; the present state of the Hızır Paşa Madrasa could not be determined.

The Çorlulu Ali Paşa Endowment Deed and Mustafa Efendi

The footnote makes a correction about the identity of Mirza Mustafa Efendi: on the endowment deed of Çorlulu Ali Paşa dated 1120 (1708-09) there is the signature "Mustafa bin Kenan el-Kadı bi-asker-i Rûmeli." That is, Mustafa Efendi's father is Kenan, and he is not the son of Batumlu Abdürraûf Efendi, as is written in the "Sicill-i Osmanî." According to the footnote, Amasya-born Uzun Müderris Mehmed Efendi was also Mustafa Efendi's teacher.

Çorlulu Ali Paşa served as grand vizier from 1706 to 1710, married the daughter of Mustafa II in 1708, was dismissed in 1710 and was executed on Lesbos in 1711. He is buried in the cemetery of his mosque on the Divanyolu. The endowment deed bearing Mustafa Efendi's signature was therefore drawn up during Ali Paşa's grand vizierate.

Pulpit Sheikhship and Üsküdar

The "pulpit sheikhship" held by Mahmûd Efendi refers to the Friday sermon given in great mosques and sultanic mosques. The Mihrimâh Sultân Mosque is part of a sixteenth-century complex built in Üsküdar, north of İskele Square, at the head of Paşalimanı Street. No information was found in other sources on Mahmûd Efendi, Uzun Müderris Mehmed Efendi or Es'ad Mehmed Efendi; for this reason the years of service and the mullaship of Salonica rest only on Hüsameddin.
