Binâ'en-aleyh Rûmlar, hafiyyen ittifâk ederek 461'de Ka'ik'in ava çıkdığı bir günde ansızın etrâfını sarıp Kayseriyye civârında itlâf etdikleri tebeyyün etdikde Kapadokya kısmı dahi Pon vâlîsi olan Jutati'us uhdesine tevcîh edildi, ya'nî kurûn-ı ûlâda Togay Türkleri'nin mesken-i kadîmi olan Pon ve Kapadokya kıt'aları tevhîd olunarak Amasya vâlîsi Jutat'ın idâresine verildi.
Fakat bu vak'a, Ermeniler'e pek ziyâde te'sîr etmekle maktûl Ka'ik'in hemşîrezâdesi Rupin, Kayseriyye'den firâr ve ihtifâ edib başına toplanan Ermeniler ile Rûmlar'ın aleyhine kıyâm ve çeteler teşkîl ve Rûmlar'ın ta'addiyâtından zâten dil-gîr olan Nastûriyyü'l-mezheb Becenek Türkleri'yle tevhîd-i mesâ'î ederek ortodoks mezhebinde bulunan Rûmlar'ı fevkalâde iz'âc etmeğe başladılar.
Bilâd-ı Rûmiyye'nin dâhilen şu ihtilâlini müşâhede eden Anadolu hükümdârı Mansûr Hân, aralık aralık bilâd-ı Rûm'a savlet ederek Ermeniler'i iltizâm ve teşvîk ve müslim Türkler'den dahi birtakım akıncılar tertîb ederek bir tarafdan Rûmlar'ı fenâ hâlde tazyîk ediyor, diğer tarafdan Hristiyân Becenekler'i tenvîre çalışıyordu. Bu husûsda müslim Türk akıncılarından Kayseriyye hudûdu üzerinde "Anuştigin, Gümüştigin" ve Sivas hudûdu üzerinde "İltigin, Karatigin" gâyet meşhûr birer kahramân idi.
Bu dört akıncı beyleri hudûd üzerinde bulunan Rûmlar'a [262] fevkalâde dehşet veriyor, Rûmlar çocuklarını bunların adlarıyla korkutuyorlardı. Bu dörtlerin içinde Kayseriyye tarafında Gümüştigin ve Sivas ile Tokat etrâfında İltigin gâyet meşhûr oldukları cihetle Gümüştigin'e "Alemü'd-dîn" ve İltigin'e dahi "Nâsıru'd-dîn" lakabları verilmiş idi.
Târîh-i Âl-i Dânişmend'de mestûr olduğu üzere Nâsıru'd-dîn İltigin, Türk beylerinden hükûmet-i Artukiyye mü'essisi olan Emîr Artuk'un kölesi iken âzâd edilmiş Horasân erlerinden bir kahramân olduğu cihetle "Artukî, Artûgî, Artûhî" diye yâd olunurdu. İltigin, tenâsüb-i endâmı mükemmel, vechen güzel, Rûm lisânına ve âdâb-ı mu'âşeretine vâkıf bir delikanlı olduğu münâsebetle Amasya vâlîsi Şettât'ın kızı Ape, bunu mükerreren Rûm kıyâfetinde görüp âşık olmuş idi.
Ape, İltigin'i bir def'a daha görüp kendisine ibrâz-ı muhabbet etmiş, İltigin dahi Ape'nin derdiyle yandığını kendisine anlatmış idi.
Şu ahvâl-i mazbûta bu vak'a-i târîhiyyenin - sûret-i cereyânında biraz mübâlağa karışdırılmış olsa bile - bir efsâne olmadığını îzâh edecek delâ'il-i zâhiredendir.
Sultân Alp Arslan, derhâl Mardin şehrine gelip ma'iyyetinde ancak on beş bin kadar³¹⁴ mücâhidân-ı İslâm ile harb etmek istiyor, fakat Rûm ordusunun kesreti cesâretini kırıyor, üserâ-yı Rûmiyye'yi i'âde etmek üzere imparator Romanus'a teklîf-i sulh ediyordu. [265]
Çünkü Rûm ordusu; Ermeni, Becenek, Bulgar, Rus, Rûm, Arab, Kumân, Gürcü, Laz gibi milel-i muhtelife Hristiyânlarından mürekkeb bir kesret-i müdhişe idi.
Sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin nezdinde bulunup da Rûm ordusunun şu ahvâlini tedkîk eden İmâmu'l-Hanîfe Ebû Nasr Abdülmelik el-Buhârî bir tarafdan cihâdın fezâ'il-i uhreviyyesini, mehâsin-i dünyeviyyesini kemâl-i belâgatla tafsîl ederek sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhi teşcî' ve harbe teşvîk ediyor, diğer tarafdan İmparator Romanus dahi sulhu red ve elçileri kemâl-i hakâretle i'âde ederek Alp Arslan'ı son derece kızdırıyordu.
Hulâsa Sultân Alp Arslan Hân hazretleri dîn uğurunda ma'iyyet-i mevcûdesiyle ölmeğe tavtîn-i nefs ederek dağları inleten sadâ-yı tekbîr içinde kendisini mücâhidân-ı İslâm ile beraber Rûm ordusuna kemâl-i şiddetle vurdu.
464 evâ'iline müsâdif olan Türkler'in bu galebe-i kâmilesi, âlem-i İslâmda Türkler'e hâsseten Türkmenler'e pek büyük bir teveccüh-i umûmî [266] kazandırmış, imparatorun esâreti İstanbul'a aks eyledikde yerine Kostantin Dukas oğlu Yedinci Mihâ'îl Bizans imparatoru olmuş idi. Hâlbuki imparator Romanus, Alp Arslan'a karşı ta'ahhüd eylediği şerâ'it-i sulhiyyeyi îfâ için tahtında bulunması lâzım geliyordu.
Subhu'l-A'şâ'da Şihâbeddîn Ahmed el-Kalkaşendî diyor ki: "464'de Sultân Alp Arslan, imparator Romanus'u âzâd ederek tahtına iclâs için müslim Türkler'den bir kuvve-i azîme terfîk ve İstanbul tarafına i'zâm eyledi. Romanus ile Mîhâ'il birkaç def'a yek-diğeriyle çarpışdılar".
Fakat Anadolu kumandânı olan Fokas hânedânından Nikefor bin Botonyadis bin Ernel Fokas ki Târîh-i Âl-i Dânişmend'de "Tekfûr" diye mezkûrdur, Amasya vâlîsi Jutat'ın istimdâdı üzerine ma'iyyet-i mevcûdesiyle gelip Elbistân civârında Ebû Nasr et-Togânî'ye mukâbele ederek harben emîr-i müşârün-ileyhi ric'ate mecbûr etmekle kesb-i ta'ayyün etmiş idi.
465 rebî'ulevvelinin altıncı günü Bâtınîlerden Yûsuf nâmında bir hâ'in, o gâzî-i âlî-sîret, kahramân-ı şîr-savlet olan Asya hükümdârı Sultân Alp Arslan Hân hazretlerini çadırında ale'l-gafle vurup şehîd etmekle yerine şehzâdesi Sultân Celâleddîn Melikşâh-ı Selçûkî Asya hükümdârı olduğu gibi Anadolu kumandânı olan Nikofor Fokas dahi Bizans imparatoru oldu. [268]
Bu esnâda Emîr Mansûr es-Selçûkî Antâkiyye'yi zabt edib Konya'yı muhâsara, Emîr Tursân et-Türkmânî, Ercis havâlîsini istîlâ ederek Kayseriyye'yi tazyîke himmet ve ammizâdesi Ebû Nasr et-Togânî de Elbistân'ı alıp Sivas'ı tahlîse gayret ediyor, Bunların sevk etdikleri İltigin, Anuştigin, Karatigin, Gümüştigin gibi akıncı beyleri de birer müfreze mücâhid ile Pon ve Kapadokya kıt'alarına dehşet veriyorlardı.
Mür'i't-Tevârîh'de mestûr olduğu üzere 466 recebinde Emîr Ebû Nasr et-Togânî Sultân Melikşâh tarafından aldığı bir kuvve-i imdâdiyye ile Malatya'dan hareket ve Sivas'ı bir ay kadar muhâsara etdikden sonra cebren alıp ric'at ve azîmet yolunu açık bulundurmak için kalesini hedm eyledi. Firâr eden Sivas beyi Nikolas dahi Tokat beyi olan birâderi Raminos'un yanına geldi.
Hudûd-ı Rûmiyye'nin Türkmenler tarafından fütûhâta ma'rûz olması, Nikofor'un idâresizliğine haml olunarak Rûm generalleri impatorluk sevdâsıyla her tarafdan baş kaldırıyor, dâhilî isyânlar Bizans impatorluğunu herc ü merc ediyor, nihâyet esbak impator Amasyalı İsak Komnenos'un birâderi Aleksiyus Komnenos bu sene Bizans impatoru oluyordu. Târîh-i Dânişmendî'de Harşene beyi Şettât'ın amcası oğlu Rûm kralı dediği Aleksi budur.
Amasya vâlîsi Jutati'us, Tokat'ı muhâfaza etmek üzere Canik beyi Le'on, Çorum beyi Nestor, Sinop beyi Yovanis, Niksar beyi Mihâ'îl nâmlarıyla ma'rûf ifarlarını Tokat beyi Raminos'un imdâdına me'mûr eylediyse de bunlar, emîr-i müşârün-ileyhin şiddetli hücûmunu def'e muktedir olamadıkları cihetle Tokat, Komenât, Niksâr kaleleri kemâl-i su'ûbetle feth olundukdan sonra Emîr Ebû Nasr Ahmed Gâzi, Kâşân (Turhâl) [270] şehrine kadar geldi.
Bunlardan mukaddem kabûl-i [271] İslâm eden Sivaslı Hüseyin Gâzi Bey dahi Becenekler'den olmakla Sivas beyi olmuşdur.
Hattâ Kâşân kasabasında münzevî olarak Hristiyân Rûmlar'ın mu'tekidi olan üç papaz dahi gördükleri bir rü'yâ üzerine şeref-i İslâm ile müşerref olmaları, Rûmlar'dan bir kısmının da kabûl-i İslâm etmelerine bâ'is olduğu cihetle Emîr Ahmed Gâzi'nin Kâşân kasabasında ikâmeti, kuvve-i harbiyyesini tanzîm ve ikmâl için büyük bir fırsat teşkîl etmiş idi.
Hulâsa Emîr Ahmed Gâzi, Amasya'ya on dört sâat kurb mesâfede ve cenûb tarafında bulunan Kâşân (Turhâl) kasabasında kışı çıkarıp 467 senesi recebinde leyle-i regâ'ib seherinde ma'iyyet-i mevcûdesiyle Harşene (Amasya) üzerine hareket ederek İltigin Gâzi talî'a kumandanı olduğu hâlde Amasya'nın cenûb boğazı önünde ya'nî şimdiki Derbend Bâğları hizâsında ahz-ı mevki' eyledi.
Binâ'en-aleyh Emîr Ahmed Gâzi, İltigin Gâzi'nin tasvîbi üzere ordusuna ric'at emrini verip muntazaman avdet ederek Derbend'in bir buçuk sâat gerisinde bulunan Kaynar sahrâsında hayme-zen-i ikâmet oldu. Emîr-i müşârün-ileyhin burada ikâmet edib ordunun zehâ'ir ve levâzım-ı seferiyyesini ikmâle çalışdığı esnâda Malatya'dan on beş bin kadar mücâhidlerden mürekkeb bir kuvve-i imdâdiyye geldiği gibi Zile, Tokat, Sivas, Niksâr taraflarını muhâfaza için bırakdığı alayları da celb ederek [273] ordusunu takviye ediyor, ba'dehû kollar tertîb ederek düşmanın ahvâlini keşfe çalışıyordu.
Bu tarafda Amasya vâlîsi Jutati'us, ammizâdesi olan Bizans imparatoru Aleksiyus'dan mukaddemen istimdâd eylediği cihetle Ankara ve Kastamonu fırkaları Pon kıt'asının istihlâsına me'mûren hareket ediyor, fakat Emîr Tursan Gâzi Kayseriyye üzerinden gelip Ankara'yı ansızın muhâsara ve ahâlî-i şehrin istîmânıyla feth ederek Ankara vâlîsinin gâyet müstesnâ bir hüsn ü cemâl ile şöhret-gîr olan kızını alıp Emîr Ahmed Gâzi'ye takdîm etmek üzere gönderiyor, bundan haberdâr olan Ankara vâlîsi dönüyor, yolda Emîr Tursan Gâzi'ye bi't-tesâdüf harben münhezim olarak İstanbul'a firâr ediyor.
Kastamonu kumandânı fırkasıyla beraber Amasya'ya tekarrüb eylediği hâlde Ankara vak'asından haberdâr olan Amasya vâlîsi Jutati'us fenâ hâlde me'yûs oluyor, istîmân etmesini muvâfık buluyor, fakat Harşene kalesi muhâfızı ve Jutat'ın kayınbirâderi olan Ermeni Mihrân bu re'yi muvâfık görmüyor, Amasya merkez kumandânı Mitrakiyus ile Nikonya beyi Nasturus, Mihrân'ın re'yini kabûl ediyor, hulâsa son dereceye kadar müdâfa'a etmeğe karâr veriyorlar.
Emîr Ahmed Gâzi, tertîb etdiği kollar, Harşene içine gönderdiği adamlar, tutduğu diller vâsıtasıyla bunlara vâkıf oldukdan sonra Kastamonu fırkasının Amasya'ya gelmesini beklemeksizin ırmağın bir derece [274] çekilmesini müte'âkib 467 şa'bânının evâ'ilinde hareket ve tekrâr Amasya boğazına muvâsalat eyledi.
Emîr Ahmed Gâzi burada iki kol tertîb edib birini Ferhâd Gâzi idâresinde Fon Dağı'ndan Çakallar üzerine, diğerini de Suli Gâzi idâresinde Kelkis Dağı'nın arkasından Şeyh Cû'î Bâğları üzerine inmeğe me'mûr ve Abdullah Gâzi müfrezesini Ferhâd Gâziye ve Serkis Ahmed Gâzi müfrezesini de Süli Gâzi'ye terfîk etdi.
Ba'dehû Emîr Ahmed Gâzi, Amasya ırmağının cenûbdan sağ sâhilini ya'nî Helvâcı Pınarı tarafını ve İltigin Gâzi dahi sol sâhilini ya'nî Çalan Köprü'nün garb tarafını tutup her biri ma'iyyet-i mevcûdesiyle yürüdüler. Tîr-endâzların, dalkılıçların âteş gibi savleti önünde Rûmlar bir türlü mukâvemet edemeyerek Ferhâd Arası'nda kâ'in karşılıklı kalelere kapanıp son derece müdâfa'a ediyorlardı.
Ferhâd Gâzi, kemâl-i sür'atle Fon Dağı'na çıkarken yağmur gibi yağan oklara ehemmiyet vermiyor, Ermiş üzerinden gelen süvârî gâzîler Ferhâd Gâzi'nin harekâtını teshîl ediyor, güç hâl ile Fon Dağı'nın üzerine çıkdığı esnâda vücûdunun müte'addid yerlerine isâbet eden okların te'sîriyle bîtâb olarak düşüyor, şehîden irtihâl-i dâr-ı na'îm edib düşdüğü yere defn olunduğu anda mücâhidlerin başına Abdullah Gâzi geçiyor, Rûmları tepeleyerek Çakallar'a doğru iniyor.
Süli Gâzi de Kelkis tarafı kumandânı olan Nastûr'un ma'iyyetindeki [275] Rûmlar'ı Serkis Ahmed Gâzi'nin bir hud'a-i harbiyyesiyle perîşân ediyor, Nastûr esîr olacağını idrâk etmekle Nikonya tarafına firâr ederek garb tarafı tamâmiyle boş kalıyor, Süli Gâzi bilâ-mâni' Şeyh Cû'î Bâğları'na doğru inmeğe başlıyor. Hulâsa Rûmlar'ın her iki tarafdan ümîdleri kesiliyor, kuvve-i ma'neviyyeleri fenâ hâlde kırılıyor.
Ferhâd Arası'nda Emîr Ahmed Gâzi ma'iyyeti sağdan, İltigin Gâzi ma'iyyeti soldan tekbîr na'ralarıyla hem-zebân olarak dağları inlete inlete yalın kılıç muttasıl ilerliyorlar, perîşân olan Rûmlar'ı Amasya kumandânı Mitrakiyus bir türlü durduramıyor, nihâyet Mitrakiyus bir mücâhidin aşk eylediği bir kılıç sadmesiyle yere devriliyor, bunu gören Amasya vâlîsi Jutati'us (Şettât) ve ma'iyyeti şimâle doğru firâr ediyor.
Müte'addid Târîh-i Âl-i Dânişmend nüshalarının³¹⁹ ve kısmen Mirkâtü'l-Cihâd'ın [276] verdiği şu ma'lûmât üzerine Emîr Ahmed Gâzi ve İltigin Gâzi Ferhâd Arası'ndan Amasya'ya girdiği esnâda Suli ve Abdullah Gâziler dahi Amasya'ya inmişler idi. Rûm askerlerinin kısm-ı a'zamı firâr ve bir kısmı da Harşene kalesine tahassun etmekle Amasya Hristiyânları, Amasya patrîki Vengiyus (Vankilos) vâsıtasıyla istîmân ederek Emîr Ahmed Gâzi hazretlerinin afvını ricâ etdiler.
Emîr Ahmed Gâzi, firâr eden Şettât'ı ta'kîb ve der-dest etmek üzere ümerâdan Abdullah, Serkis Ahmed, Karatigin Gâziler'i birer müfreze ile üç koldan i'zâm edib Şettât, Osmâncık boğazında yakalandığı cihetle Amasya'ya getirilmiş, Ankara vâlîsinin esîr edilen kızı da bu sırada Amasya'ya gelmiş idi.
Fakat Harşene muhâfızı olan Ermeni Mihrân kaleye kapanıp mezbûhâne bir hareket olmak üzere müdâfa'a etmek azmini gösteriyor, Emîr Ahmed Gâzi kalenin teslîmini mükerreren teklîf ve kendisine i'tâ-yı emân eylediği hâlde cümlesini de redd ederek müdâfa'ada ısrâr ediyordu.

In Modern English
Jutat (Jutatius), governor of Amasya, was known by the name "Şettât," as written in the Dânişmendnâme (Târîh-i Âl-i Dânişmend), Dürretü'l-Eslâk and el-Aylemü'z-Zâhir. He was a cousin of the Greek emperor Isaac Komnenos and a son of Komnenos, son of Erkirus; he was the last of the governors appointed to Amasya by the Byzantine empire. He had sons named Nikolas and Raminus, a daughter Ape (Efrûmiyye Bânû), and a brother-in-law, Mihrân, of the Armenian noble houses; he had another daughter, whose husband was a prince known as Nestur.
Ka'ik, governor of Cappadocia, being a tyrant raised in independence, had wearied the Greeks in every respect, and his oppression had left a bad effect on them. In particular, the difference of sect was in no condition to reconcile the immigrant Armenians and the native Greeks. For this reason relations between the two Christian peoples were naturally spoiled, and Ka'ik had offended the Greeks by protecting the Armenians.
Thereupon the Greeks, agreeing in secret, in 461, one day when Ka'ik had gone out hunting, suddenly surrounded him and killed him near Kayseri. When this was understood, the Cappadocia region too was attached to Jutatius, governor of Pontus; that is, the Pontus and Cappadocia regions, in very ancient times the old homeland of the Togay Turks, were united and given to the administration of Jutat, governor of Amasya.
But this event affected the Armenians greatly. Rupin, the son of the sister of the murdered Ka'ik, fled from Kayseri and hid; with the Armenians who gathered around him he rose against the Greeks and formed bands. Joining forces with the Pecheneg Turks of the Nestorian sect, who were already weary of the Greeks' injustices, they began to trouble the Orthodox Greeks greatly.
Seeing this internal confusion of the Greek land, Mansûr Han, ruler of Anatolia, from time to time attacked the Greek land, supporting and encouraging the Armenians. Organizing some raiders from among the Muslim Turks, he pressed the Greeks into a very bad position on one side and tried on the other to enlighten the Christian Pechenegs. In this matter, among the Muslim Turkish raiders, Anuştigin and Gümüştigin on the Kayseri frontier and İltigin and Karatigin on the Sivas frontier were each very famous heroes.
These four raider beys spread great fear among the Greeks on the frontier, and the Greeks frightened their children with their names. Since among these four Gümüştigin on the Kayseri side and İltigin around Sivas and Tokat were very famous, Gümüştigin was given the epithet "Alemüddîn" and İltigin "Nâsırüddîn."
As written in the Dânişmendnâme, Nâsırüddîn İltigin was a hero among the Khorasanian soldiers freed from slavery who had been the slave of Emîr Artuk, one of the Turkish beys and founder of the Artukid state; for this reason he was called "Artukî, Artûgî, Artûhî." İltigin was a young man of fine stature and handsome face, well versed in the Greek language and Greek manners. Ape, daughter of Şettât, governor of Amasya, had seen him many times in Greek dress and had fallen in love with him.
Ape had shown İltigin her love once more, and İltigin had told her that he was burning with her affliction. Since they had promised to meet at a meeting place agreed between them, İltigin that day, again in Greek dress, arrived first at the meeting place and left the soldiers with him in ambush.
When Ape came there with a few girls for a stroll she saw only İltigin, and as she was preparing for the reunion, at a sign given by İltigin the raiders coming out of the ambush seized Ape and the girls together with İltigin and carried them off. After this event Ape accepted the religion of Islam, married İltigin, and, her name slightly altered, was called "Efrûmiyye Bânû, Ape-i Rûmiyye."
This information given by the said history (the Dânişmendnâme) is confirmed by the fact that the graves of İltigin Gâzi and Efrûmiyye Bânû are places visited by the people in Amasya. Their lineage is mentioned in the court records as among the notables of Amasya for some seven hundred years. Even if some exaggeration has mixed into the course of the event, this information is plain proof explaining that this historical event is not a legend.
The Greeks, who were already crushing one another because of church disputes, were very angry at the attacks of the Turks and Armenians. They sought the causes of these attacks and oppressed those who were their mortal enemies, as though they had brought about these events. For this reason terrible cries rose from every part of Anatolia to the pleasure- and entertainment-loving Byzantine empire, pressing the empire extremely hard.
Romanus, who became Byzantine emperor in 459, considering the state of Anatolia, in 461 sent Manu'il Komnenos, whom he had appointed to the command of Anatolia, to the Pontus region with a great force. Hearing this, Mansûr Han, ruler of Anatolia, and Ebû Nasr Ahmed et-Togânî met Manu'il with a sufficient force.
As written in the Eastern and Western histories, in this battle fought in 462 Manu'il Komnenos, commander-in-chief of the Greeks, suffered a heavy defeat. The Muslims took the Sivas, Elbistan, Kayseri and Konya areas and their surroundings and returned having taken a great deal of booty.
For Jutat, governor of Pontus, had supported the commander-in-chief Manu'il with an auxiliary force. For this reason Emîr Ebû Nasr et-Togânî was forced to withdraw from the Sivas direction and his cousin Emîr Tursân et-Türkmânî from the Kayseri frontier. Nikolas, son of Jutat and bey of Sivas, was then able to retake the city of Sivas and its surroundings.
Since this defeat of the commander-in-chief Manu'il angered the Greek emperor Romanus very much, he at once began war preparations; with a great army of some two hundred thousand³¹³ that he was able to gather, he came to the Pontus region in 462. The Islamic emirs, that is, the Turkish beys, on the frontier reported to Sultan Alp Arslan Han, the Seljuk ruler, who lay ill in the city of Hoy, that after completing his preparations here he was marching by way of Sivas toward Manzikert.
Sultan Alp Arslan came at once to the city of Mardin and wished to fight with the Islamic ghazis with him, only some fifteen thousand³¹⁴ in number, but the multitude of the Greek army broke his courage, and he proposed peace to the emperor Romanus, offering to give back the Greek prisoners.
For the Greek army was a terrifying crowd made up of various Christian nations such as Armenians, Pechenegs, Bulgarians, Russians, Greeks, Arabs, Cumans, Georgians and Laz. They had no fighting value other than their numbers; they hated one another through sectarian and national disputes and were scattered and disordered materially.
İmâmu'l-Hanîfe Ebû Nasr Abdülmelik el-Buhârî, who was beside the sultan and examined this state of the Greek army, on one hand encouraged the sultan and urged him to war by describing with full eloquence the merits of jihad in the hereafter and its beauties in this world. On the other hand, the emperor Romanus too, rejecting peace and sending the envoys back with great contempt, enraged Alp Arslan exceedingly.
In short, Sultan Alp Arslan Han, resolving to die for the faith with the force he had, attacked the Greek army with great violence together with the Islamic ghazis amid cries of takbir that made the mountains resound. The Christian columns, standing like great mountains, were struck down within one day as if by lightning. The emperor Romanus was taken prisoner. The Islamic ghazis pursued the remaining remnants of the sword like a roaring lion; from this day Greekdom lost power in Anatolia, and the Turks regained their old homeland.
This complete victory of the Turks, which fell at the beginning of 464, brought the Turks, especially the Turkmens, great general interest in the Islamic world. When the emperor's capture reached Istanbul, Michael VII, son of Konstantin Dukas, had become Byzantine emperor in his place. Yet in order for the emperor Romanus to fulfill the peace terms he had undertaken toward Alp Arslan, he needed to be on his throne.
Şihâbeddîn Ahmed el-Kalkaşendî says in Subhu'l-A'şâ: "In 464 Sultan Alp Arslan, to release the emperor Romanus and seat him on his throne, added a great force of Muslim Turks to him and sent him toward Istanbul. Romanus and Mîhâ'il clashed with each other several times."
As written in Dürretü'l-Eslâk, since "Sultan Alp Arslan sent his cousin Emîr Mansûr es-Selçûkî, with the emir Ebû Nasr Ahmed et-Togânî and other Turkish emirs, to seat the emperor Romanus in his office," it was precisely this political event that caused the conquest of Anatolia.
Although Romanus had been defeated by the army sent by the emperor Mihâ'il on the border of the province of Pontus, taken prisoner and blinded at Kütahya, Mansûr Han and Ebû Nasr et-Togânî pressed the Pontus and Cappadocia regions hard.
Jutatius, governor of Pontus and Cappadocia, although he worked hard for the province's defense, could not calm the internal disorders at all. On one side İltigin, bey of the raiders, and on the other the Armenian band leader Serkis ravaged every part of the province of Pontus, and Nikolas, bey of Sivas, constantly asked for help.
That year Emîr Ebû Nasr Ahmed et-Togânî conquered Malatya; the emirate of Malatya was given to him by Sultan Alp Arslan. After receiving a caliphal decree stating that the emirate of the Greek lands he would conquer belonged to him, he prepared thirty thousand infantry and ten thousand cavalry and marched toward the province of Pontus.³¹⁵
But Nikephoros, son of Ernel Fokas, son of Botonyadis, of the Phokas dynasty, commander of Anatolia, who is called "Tekfur" in the Dânişmendnâme, on Jutat's request for help came with the force he had, met Ebû Nasr et-Togânî around Elbistan and, forcing him to withdraw by fighting, had made himself accepted.
On the sixth day of Rebîülevvel 465 a traitor named Yûsuf, of the Bâtınîs, caught unawares in his tent and martyred that lofty-natured, lion-assaulting ruler of Asia, Sultan Alp Arslan Han. In his place his son Sultan Celâleddîn Melikşah-ı Selçûkî became ruler of Asia, and the commander of Anatolia, Nikephoros Phokas, became Byzantine emperor.
At this time Emîr Mansûr es-Selçûkî was taking Antioch and besieging Konya, Emîr Tursân et-Türkmânî was taking the Erciş area and making efforts to press Kayseri, and his cousin Ebû Nasr et-Togânî was taking Elbistan and trying to rescue Sivas. The raider beys they sent, such as İltigin, Anuştigin, Karatigin and Gümüştigin, each with a detachment, were also spreading fear in the Pontus and Cappadocia regions.
As written in Mür'i't-Tevârîh, in Receb 466 Emîr Ebû Nasr et-Togânî set out from Malatya with an auxiliary force he had received from Sultan Melikşah, besieged Sivas for about a month and took it by force; to keep the way of retreat and advance open, he also demolished its fortress. Nikolas, bey of Sivas, who had fled, came to his brother Raminos, bey of Tokat.
That the Greek frontiers had become open to the conquests of the Turkmens was blamed on Nikephoros's incompetence. Greek generals were rising in revolt from every side with imperial ambition, and internal rebellions were turning the Byzantine empire upside down. In the end, Alexios Komnenos, brother of the former emperor Isaac Komnenos of Amasya, became Byzantine emperor that year. This is the Alexios called in the Dânişmendnâme the Greek king who was cousin of Şettât, bey of Harşene.
But at Alexios's accession Konya had been conquered by Emîr Mansûr Selçûkî, Erzurum by Emîr Salık (Saltuk) Bey, and Erzincan, Kemah and their surroundings by Emîr Mengücek. Thus in Anatolia the Greek frontiers were being continuously pressed from east, south and west; the European, that is, Rumeli, frontier was also in a bad state through the attacks of the Bulgarians and Normans.
Thereupon Emîr Ebû Nasr et-Togânî divided the force he had at Sivas into two. He gave one column, made up of thirty thousand ghazis, to the command of his cousin Tursan Bey; adding to him the slaves he had freed, the raider beys famous as Gümüştigin and Anuştigin, he assigned him to the conquest of Kayseri. He himself, taking his other cousins Suli and Çavlı Beys and the raider beys famous as İltigin and Karatigin, marched on Tokat with some fifty thousand ghazis.³¹⁶
Jutatius, governor of Amasya, to protect Tokat, sent his commanders known as Le'on, bey of Canik, Nestor, bey of Çorum, Yovanis, bey of Sinop, and Mihâ'îl, bey of Niksar, to the aid of Raminos, bey of Tokat. But they could not repel the violent attack of the said emir; after the fortresses of Tokat, Komana and Niksar were taken with great difficulty, Emîr Ebû Nasr Ahmed Gâzi came as far as the city of Kâşân (Turhal).
Since winter had set in at this time, Emîr Ahmed et-Togânî stayed in the city of Kâşân; during the guerrilla warfare he took the fortress of Karkariyye (Zile) and also kept Jutat, governor of Amasya, occupied. Here, thanks to the guiding work that İltigin Gâzi had carried on for years, some of the Pechenegs and Armenians, who were weary of the Greeks, were honored with Islam.
Among them the famous band leaders Boris (Bori) of Tokat, Olgas (Olgay) of Zana and Serkis Bey of Amasya came before Ahmed Gâzi, emir of the ghazis, through the mediation of his silahtar Mübârekşah. They accepted Islam before the army kadı Celâleddîn Abdurrahmân el-Hârezmî; they asked him to take them and their men into his blessed army in order to attain martyrdom for the faith.
Emîr Ahmed Gâzi congratulated them and rewarded them. He ordered the council secretary Ebu'l-Ma'âlî Muhammed ibn Beşîr el-Bağdâdî to enter their names in the register as Böri Abdullah, Olgaz Muhammed, Serkis Ahmed.³¹⁷ Appointing each to the post he deserved, he was increasing the number of his army and raising its fighting strength. Hüseyin Gâzi Bey of Sivas, who had accepted Islam before them, became bey of Sivas because he too was of the Pechenegs.
Indeed three priests who lived in seclusion in the town of Kâşân and were respected by the Christian Greeks were also honored with Islam on account of a dream they saw. Since this too caused some of the Greeks to accept Islam, Emîr Ahmed Gâzi's staying in the town of Kâşân had created a great opportunity for organizing and completing his fighting strength.
In short, Emîr Ahmed Gâzi spent the winter in the town of Kâşân (Turhal), about fourteen hours south of Amasya. In the year 467, in Receb, at dawn on the Night of Regâib, he moved on Harşene (Amasya) with the force he had; İltigin Gâzi, as vanguard commander, took position before the southern gorge of Amasya, that is, at the level of today's Derbend Bağları.
But since it was spring, the Amasya river was flowing in flood and had inundated every side. Both sides of the gorge were like solid fortresses. The Fon (Ferhâd) and Kelkis (Karaman) mountains and the Ferhâd Arası were full of Greek soldiers like the Day of Judgment. On Mount Fon, Şettât (Jutatius), governor of Harşene, on Mount Kelkis Nasturus, bey of Nikonya, and in the Ferhâd Arası General Mitrakiyus, commander of the center, directed the soldiers.
Despite these natural obstacles and military difficulties, the saints of Khorasan and Khwarazm, that is, the ghazi Turkish cavalry, had advanced as far as the Ferhâd Arası. Since the movement of the whole army continued as an assault, many Greeks, including Kayrilus, patriarch of Amasya, died and were struck down in the battle fought inside the gorge.
But the commander of the center, General Mitrakiyus,³¹⁸ of the Christian Pechenegs, made a steep place in the Ferhâd Arası his rampart and defended fiercely. Since the river also closed the narrow part of the Ferhâd Arası, the possibility of going further was reduced. Nevertheless, since the rain of arrows from Mount Fon did great damage and made Emîr Ahmed Gâzi's position difficult, he found it appropriate to withdraw for the time being and wait for the river to fall.
Thereupon Emîr Ahmed Gâzi, with İltigin Gâzi's approval, gave his army the order to withdraw, returned in good order and encamped on the Kaynar plain, an hour and a half behind Derbend. While the emir, staying there, was trying to complete the army's provisions and campaign supplies, an auxiliary force of some fifteen thousand ghazis arrived from Malatya. He strengthened his army by summoning also the regiments he had left to guard the Zile, Tokat, Sivas and Niksar areas, and then organized columns and tried to reconnoiter the enemy's situation.
At this time, since Jutatius, governor of Amasya, had earlier asked for help from the Byzantine emperor Alexios, his cousin, the Ankara and Kastamonu units were moving to rescue the Pontus region. But Emîr Tursan Gâzi came by way of Kayseri and suddenly besieged Ankara; when the city's people asked for quarter he took it. He took the daughter of the governor of Ankara, famed for her beauty, and sent her to present to Emîr Ahmed Gâzi. Learning this, the governor of Ankara turned back, met Emîr Tursan Gâzi on the road, was defeated and fled to Istanbul.
The commander of Kastamonu had approached Amasya with his unit. Jutatius, governor of Amasya, hearing of the Ankara affair, fell into great despair and found it appropriate to ask for quarter. But Mihrân the Armenian, commander of the fortress of Harşene and brother-in-law of Jutat, did not find this view right. Mitrakiyus, commander of the center of Amasya, and Nasturus, bey of Nikonya, accepted Mihrân's view; in short, they decided to defend to the end.
After learning these things through the columns he had organized, the men he had sent into Harşene and the prisoners he had taken, Emîr Ahmed Gâzi, without waiting for the Kastamonu unit to come to Amasya, set out at the beginning of Şaban 467, after the river had receded somewhat, and again reached the Amasya gorge.
Here Emîr Ahmed Gâzi organized two columns. He assigned one, under the command of Ferhâd Gâzi, to descend from Mount Fon onto Çakallar, and the other, under the command of Suli Gâzi, to descend from behind Mount Kelkis onto Şeyh Cû'î Bağları. He sent the detachment of Abdullah Gâzi to join Ferhâd Gâzi and the detachment of Serkis Ahmed Gâzi to join Süli Gâzi.
Then Emîr Ahmed Gâzi held the right bank of the Amasya river from the south, that is, the Helvacı Pınarı side, and İltigin Gâzi its left bank, that is, the west side of the Çalan Köprü; each marched with the force he had. Before the fiery assault of the archers and the straight-sword men, the Greeks could not resist; shutting themselves in the facing fortresses in the Ferhâd Arası, they defended extremely hard.
Ferhâd Gâzi, climbing Mount Fon at great speed, paid no heed to the arrows falling like rain. The mounted ghazis coming by way of Ermiş eased Ferhâd Gâzi's movement. When with difficulty he had climbed above Mount Fon, he collapsed exhausted to the ground from the arrows that struck many places on his body, died a martyr and migrated to the abode of paradise, and was buried where he fell. At that very moment Abdullah Gâzi took command of the ghazis and descended toward Çakallar, crushing the Greeks.
Süli Gâzi too, by a stratagem of war of Serkis Ahmed Gâzi, scattered the Greeks with Nastûr, commander of the Kelkis side. When Nastûr realized he would be taken prisoner he fled toward Nikonya; the west side was left entirely empty and Süli Gâzi began to descend unimpeded toward Şeyh Cû'î Bağları. In short, the Greeks' hopes were cut off on both sides and their morale was greatly broken.
In the Ferhâd Arası Emîr Ahmed Gâzi's unit from the right and İltigin Gâzi's unit from the left, carrying the same voice in cries of takbir that made the mountains resound, advanced continuously with drawn swords. Mitrakiyus, commander of Amasya, could not stop the scattering Greeks at all. In the end Mitrakiyus was felled by a sword blow that a ghazi swung with ardor; seeing this, Jutatius (Şettât), governor of Amasya, and his retinue fled northward.
According to this information given by many copies³¹⁹ of the Dânişmendnâme and partly by Mirkâtü'l-Cihâd, at the time Emîr Ahmed Gâzi and İltigin Gâzi entered Amasya from the Ferhâd Arası, Suli and Abdullah Gâzis had also descended to Amasya. The greater part of the Greek soldiers had fled and some had taken refuge in the fortress of Harşene. The Christians of Amasya, through Vengiyus (Vankilos), patriarch of Amasya, asked for quarter and begged pardon of his Excellency Emîr Ahmed Gâzi.
Emîr Ahmed Gâzi sent the emirs Abdullah, Serkis Ahmed and Karatigin Gâzis, each with a detachment, by three routes to pursue and capture the fleeing Şettât. Since Şettât was caught in the Osmancık gorge he was brought to Amasya; the captured daughter of the governor of Ankara had also come to Amasya at this time.
But Mihrân the Armenian, guard of Harşene, decided to shut himself in the fortress and show fierce resistance. Emîr Ahmed Gâzi had proposed the fortress's surrender to him repeatedly and had granted him amnesty; but he rejected all of it and insisted on resisting.
İltigin Gâzi, thinking of taking the fortress without the need to shed blood, set up the stratagem of war described on page 80 of the Mukaddime and put in front of him Şettât, the captured governor of Amasya. On the fourteenth night of Şaban 467, a Thursday, at dawn he came to the fortress gate. He had Şettât knock at the gate; he had him say that he himself had come and brought auxiliary forces. Mihrân, the fortress commander, recognized Şettât by his voice and opened the gate. At once the Kırklar, that is, forty ghazi soldiers, burst in with straight swords; after putting the gatekeepers and the other fortress guards to the sword and taking the fortress, his Excellency Emîr Ahmed Gâzi entered the fortress on Thursday as the sun rose, with the dignitaries of state.
It is recorded in el-Aylemü'z-Zâhir and Mür'i't-Tevârîh that the conquest of the fortress of Amasya was in Şaban of the year 467. As described in the Mukaddime, every year on the fourteenth day of Şaban the tomb of İltigin Gâzi, located at the place now known as İltekin Bağları where the said person entered during the conquest of Amasya, is visited by a large crowd, and candles are lit on the Night of Berat that comes in the evening. If one notes that this is among the local traditions, it is understood that this conquest event is a lasting memory.
The city of Harşene (Amasya), the administrative center of Fon, which our religious brothers the Arab ghazis, who show the right way, had entered many times with serious self-sacrifice but could never hold, was definitively conquered from this day by the Togânîs (Danishmendids), of the Oghuz Turks, who founded an Islamic state here.
Amasya, the true homeland historically of the old Turks, that is, the Hatti Turks famous as "Amasit, Togayit, Sanit," and of the "On Uygur" Turks later called "Hun," which had remained by force in the hands of the Greeks for some seven hundred years, was taken back through the valiant effort and Muslim zeal of the Oghuz Turks; the Turks regained their own homeland, the land where they were born.

What This Section Relates
The text is made up of two parts. The first half relates the political situation of the Pontus and Cappadocia regions before and after Manzikert, and the second the taking of the fortress of Amasya. Hüsameddin bases this account largely on works such as the Dânişmendnâme, Mirkâtü'l-Cihâd, regarded as its summary, and Dürretü'l-Eslâk. He himself discusses the reliability of these sources in footnote no. 319. He writes that he saw three copies of the Dânişmendnâme, that all three differ from one another in the course of events, and that as copies multiplied the events and names were altered until the book took on the consistency of a Battal Gazi tale. He nonetheless adds that most of the events rest on the ghazis buried in Amasya and Niksar, whose lines continue, and on local traditions, and that he therefore finds them worthy of attention.
How Reliable Is the Dânişmendnâme
The attitude of today's researchers is more cautious than Hüsameddin's. The Dânişmendnâme is an epic romance made up of conquest legends formed around the name of Dânişmend Gazi; it is closer to a folk narrative than to a historical source. According to the TDV, the work has no relation to known historical facts; for example, it relates a group of ghazis setting out from Malatya in the year 360 (970-71), whereas Malatya was then under Christian rule and this is impossible in terms of time as well. Even so, Cenâbî Mustafa Efendi and some Ottoman historians used the work as a source as though it were a real chronicle. Hüsameddin also stands within this tradition, but, knowing the differences between copies, he acts with caution.
For this reason the details in this section (the meeting of Ape and İltigin, the forty ghazis entering through the fortress gate, the trick of making Şettât knock at the gate, the names of the heroes one by one, the martyrdom of Ferhâd Gâzi on Mount Fon) should be read as a narrative living in popular memory and committed to writing. For the same reason the Greek names Hüsameddin gives, such as "Jutat, Nikolas, Raminus, Mitrakiyus," should be thought of not as persons verified in Byzantine sources but as heroes of this narrative. No confirmation of these names was found in other sources.
Manzikert and After: How the Dates Should Be Read
The broad framework in the text coincides in outline with today's knowledge. The Battle of Manzikert was fought on Friday, 26 August 1071, between Alp Arslan and the Byzantine emperor Romanos Diogenes, and the Seljuk army won a great victory. The defeated emperor was released after a time, but was deposed in his own land, was captured some time later and blinded, and died on 4 August 1072. Hüsameddin also writes that the emperor's eyes were put out; the sources confirm the event but give the details differently. Alp Arslan, after learning of the emperor's sad end, regarded the peace treaty as void, and during his campaign to the east was wounded in an assassination and died on 10 Rebîülevvel 465 (24 November 1072). The expression "the sixth day of Rebîülevvel 465" in the text departs from this date in the day; its year and month are correct.
In the Hijri years Hüsameddin gives, however, there are shifts when compared with today's records. His placing the battle in the year "462" and the echo of the victory at "the beginning of 464" does not agree with the "464/1071" the TDV entry on the Danishmendids gives for the taking of Sivas; that is, there is a shift of a few years. At the end of the next section Hüsameddin himself also admits that the conclusions he draws "cannot be put forward as established historical facts." It is appropriate for the reader to read this section not as a detailed chronology of events but as the form, still living in tradition, of the period leading to the conquest of Amasya.
Dânişmend Gazi and Amasya
Dânişmend Gazi entered the service of the Great Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan during his Caucasus campaign of 1064, took part in Manzikert, and after the victory took Sivas, which was given to him, and founded the Danishmendid dynasty. The sources write that using Sivas as a base he seized Amasya, Tokat, Niksar, Kayseri, Elbistan, Develi and Çorum with his emirs named Çavuldur, Tursan, Kara Doğan, Osmancık, İltegin and Kara Tegin. According to the Selçuknâme of Zahîrüddîn Nîsâbûrî, Alp Arslan, after Manzikert, granted Sivas, Tokat, Amasya and Kayseri as iktâ to Dânişmend Gazi. That is, according to present knowledge too, Amasya is among the first conquest areas of this dynasty; names such as İltigin and Karatigin that appear in the text are counted among these emirs in the TDV.
There is no complete agreement on the date Amasya was taken. Hüsameddin gives the fourteenth day of Şaban 467. Today, in publications of culture and tourism institutions, the conquest is written as taking place in 1075; in some commemorative speeches this date is also given as 14 February 1075. In contrast, the TDV entry on Amasya says "there is no certain information on when Amasya was conquered by the Turks." Consequently 1075 is a widely adopted and cited date; it should not be regarded as settled by documents.
İltigin Gâzi, Efrûmiyye Bânû and the Çağlayan Bridge
The story of Ape and İltigin is part of the Dânişmendnâme tradition; no reliable record of this woman was found in other sources. Hüsameddin counts the visiting of the graves in Amasya and the appearance of the lineage in the court records as proof of the event's reality. İltigin Gâzi's tie to Amasya is confirmed by another route as well: it is understood that the Çağlayan (Çalakçalık) Bridge was built in the first half of the 12th century by Hüsâmüddevle Hasan, son of İltegin Gazi, one of Yağıbasan's emirs. On the road from Amasya toward Çorum and Tokat, about six kilometers away, the bridge over the Yeşilırmak is about seventy meters long, has six wide arches, and is built of cut stone with brick tie-courses. Beside the bridge there is a grave said to belong to İltekin Gazi. This information shows that the family of the said emir left a trace in Amasya.
No detailed information was found in the sources I researched on how the commemoration of the Night of Berat that Hüsameddin describes continues today; for this reason only Hüsameddin's own account of his time is reported here.
Place Names
The text mentions old quarter and place names such as Mount Fon (Ferhâd), Mount Kelkis (Karaman), Derbend, Helvacı Pınarı, Çalan Köprü and Şeyh Cû'î Bağları; for their present equivalents one must look at the descriptions Hüsameddin gives in the first volumes of the book, and no definite identification could be made here. As for the Harşena Fortress, some sources state that the fortress underwent significant repair after the Turks took Amasya in 1075 and was used until the 18th century.
The Danishmendids' rule in Amasya lasted about a hundred years and ended with Kılıç Arslan II's taking Amasya in 1175. The city then came under Seljuk sovereignty and, in the division among Kılıç Arslan II's sons, fell to the share of Nizameddin Argunşah.
Additional Information in the Footnotes
In the footnotes the author notes the differences in figures. Ahmed Refîk's Târîh-i Umûmiyye gives the Greek army as a hundred thousand; Târîh-i Umûmî gives Alp Arslan's army as forty thousand. In the text Hüsameddin uses the figures two hundred thousand and fifteen thousand. He says that the name "Böri" in Pecheneg Turkish means "wolf" and the name "Olgaz" "robust," that Olgaz later became famous under the name "Ilgaz," and that the name "Mitrakiyus" may be related to a word in Old Turkish meaning "piece of meat"; these etymological explanations belong to Hüsameddin and could not be verified in another source.
