Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Avgât, Avk'a mensûb demekdir.

Vesâ'ik-i atîka-i şer'iyyede şimdiki Havza kasabası "Hâvize (حاوزه), Hâvize (خاوزه), Kâvize (قاوزه), Hâvize (هاوزه)" nâmlarıyla mestûrdur ve hâlâ elsine-i âmmede "Kavza" nâmıyla mezkûrdur.

Bu ırmağa "Nehr-i Amâs" dahi denir idi.

Tûrânîler'in her tarafda uğradıkları şu felâket bütün Tûrân anarlarını, kabarlarını ve oymaklarını son derece düşündürdüğü cihetle bunun def'i çâresini arıyorlardı.

Binâ'en-aleyh bizim Türk târîhlerimizde her teşkîlât Oğuz Hân'a nisbet edildiği görülmekdedir.

Hulâsa Kara Hân, kendi hevâsında ve av peşinde iken aleyhinde teşekkül eden şu cem'iyyet tamâmiyle izhâr-ı kuvvet, ibrâz-ı kudret edecek bir hâle geldikde Tiri Kutug'un verdiği "ogur" üzerine bir gün Oğuz Hân ogarlardan bir bölük fedâkâr ile pederinin zulmüne nihâyet vermiş ve iki birâderini de harben mağlûb ederek Türk hâkânı olmuşdur. [140] Oğuz Hân hicret-i seniyyeden takrîben 1400 yıl kadar evvel Türk hâkânı oldukda Irkıl Ata'yı vezîr ve müsteşâr nasb ederek ibtidâ Heytal (Türkistân) kıt'asında meskûn olan Tûrânîler'i tevhîde çalışdı. Buna muvaffak oldukdan sonra Ceyhûn'u geçdi. Âteş-perest olan Îrânîler'in dest-i zulmünü kırıp Çîn'e haddini bildirdi.

Ba'dehû Kafkasya'daki akvâm-ı Tûrâniyye'yi kendine münkâd ederek Hıtâyîler'i (Hititler'i) Anadolu'da tazyîk eden hükûmât-ı muhtelifeyi çiğneyip, bir tarafdan Sûriye'yi istîlâ ve diğer tarafdan Tuna'ya kadar hudûdunu tevsî' etmekle Mısır'ı tehdîd eyledi. Çünkü Anadolu'da zâten mevcûd olan Tûrânîler'in dâhil-i ittihâd olmaları Oğuz Hân'ın istîlâsını teshîl etmiş idi.

Tevârîh-i umûmiyye mütâla'a ve 1400-1250 târîhlerinde Âsûr, Anadolu, Îrân, Türkistân, Kafkasya, Mısır, Hind ahvâl-i umûmiyyesi tedkîk olunursa şu tasvîr edilen vekâyi', esâtîr-i kadîmeden olmadığı anlaşılır. Çünkü kable'l-hicre 1380-1190 târîhlerine kadar Anadolu'da "Sît" nâmı altında Türk oymaklarının hükûmeti tevârîh-i garbiyyenin bile zabt eylediği vekâyi'-i mühimmedendir.

Fakat bizim Türk târîhleri Oğuz Hân'ın sülâlesini pek nâkıs ve gayr-i ma'kûl bir sûretde zabt etdiklerinde şübhe yokdur. Hattâ bizim Medhal'de Silsile-nâme'den naklen yazdığımız sülâlenin bile nâkıs olduğu zann olunur. Çünkü Silsile-nâme'de Oğuz Hân'ın Bars Hân evlâdından olması sahîh [141] olabilir, lâkin Bars Hân'ın Altay Hân oğlu olması vekâyi'-i târîhiyyeye nisbetle müşkildir.

Barsevinc, takrîben kable'l-hicre 1340 hudûdunda Amasya vâlîsi oldukda, mensûb olduğu Bozok oymakları Harşenûn kıt'asına yayılıp mevâki'-i muhtelifede tavattun etdiler. [142]

Ancak 1155 târîhinden i'tibâren Amasya Îrân'a tâbi' bir eyâlet-i mümtâze hükmünde oldu.

Müverrih Reynak'ın kable'l-mîlâd 499 dediği, hicret-i seniyyeden 1121 sene evvel demekdir.

In the work called "Ünsü'l-Mühec" it is written that "Tanûsîn and Danûsiyye are in the northwest of Amasya, about two stages' distance from Amasya." As this description shows, "Tanûsîn, Tanûşîn" is today's Köprü, that is, the town of Kedağra. Evliya Çelebi, describing the town of Köprü in his Seyahatname, says "this place is called 'Şîn' in the language of the Amâlika"; this word must point to the second half of the said word Tenûşîn.

For Tanûş is read in the Greek language as Tanûs, that is, it means Tânûş. Later Köprü was called "Denûsiyye, Tenûsîn," and Kasaba, attached to Sivas, "Tanûs," in accordance with the original. Tanuş and Tânış mean "understanding and comprehension" in the dictionary and became the name of very many notables among the Turanians. The Seljuk Tânış Han, ruler of Damascus, is very famous.

Avk Han, who later became ruler of Amasya, must be a son of this Tânûş Han. As understood from local accounts, Avk Han was the son of the ruler of Amasya; he had a fortress built northwest of the village now called Avgât, once the district center near the town of Mecidözü, and gave it the name "Avgât." Avgât means belonging to Avk.

Avk, in the pattern of "yavk," is a name for a bird of prey; it has also been called "Avîk" in the dictionary. The person Evliya Çelebi, in his Seyahatname, calls "Hâvîk, one of the kings of Amasya who founded the town of Ladik" must be this Avîk. It is in all likelihood this Avîk Han too who had the town and fortress of Hâfîk (in three different spellings), attached to Sivas, built.

Afterwards, up to 1520 years before the Hijra, it is thought that very many Turanian rulers such as Amâs, Argûn, İli, Sânûs, Sülîm, Kâvus and Mangır ruled in Amasya. For of these, Amâs Han is known in history by the name Amentâs and fought neighboring peoples in the Harşena region.

It is thought that Sânûs Han ruled in Amasya and built the old town and fortress in the village of Sonusa (Sanusa, Sanusât), the old center of today's Erbaa district; that the other ruler of Amasya, Kâvus Han, built today's town and fortress of Havza (Hâvza, Kâvsâ), and Mangır Han a fortress in today's town of Gümüş. Sânûs means "one who keeps accounts," and Kâvus "one who chases away and obstructs."

Ünsü'l-Mühec records the town of Sonusa as "Sânise," the town of Havza as "Hâviz," and the town of Gümüş as "Mankıriyye." Mangır, Mângır, means "copper." In old legal documents today's town of Havza appears in several spellings such as "Hâvize" and "Kâvize"; in popular speech it is still called "Kavza." "Ancere," whose details are given in the introductory section, must be a famous town built later west of today's Havza.

That very many old works in Amasya that astonish those who see them even today are among the buildings remaining from this period is understood from the explanations of experts on antiquities.

Among them, it is written in all the eastern and western histories that the Yeşilırmak flowing through the middle of Amasya was given the name "İrîs, Îrîs" starting from these times. Since this river was of great benefit to Amasya, it is understood that the star-worshipping Amâsîts likened the river to İrîs, whom they worshipped, and called it by his name. This river was also called "Nehr-i Amâs."

As related in the introductory section, it was reported that the greatest spiritual leader of the star worshippers was called "İrîsât" in relation to this İrîs and mistakenly "İrîstât." That these İrîstâts had influence equal to khans is understood from the tomb chambers in Amasya.

Charles Texier, describing the caves of Amasya, says "an inscription above the door of one of them shows that it is the tomb of one of the great soothsayers who held power equal to kings, a great soothsayer." This cave is the Aynalı Mağara on the Ziyaret road, and there is no doubt that it is the tomb of one of these İrîstâts.

The writing seen above the hole in the middle of the Aynalı Mağara, according to what careful travelers such as Lagard and Hamilton have made out, belongs to a very ancient period and is reported to be readable as "Tîs Arsiyed, the great soothsayer of Sîbâl."

This inscription, as it facilitates our inference, also supports the accuracy of the reports above. For Sîbâl, according to what these researchers relate, is the name of an idol, that is a statue, that the Hittites took as a god. The Hittite ruler Sâbûl Han described above and this Sîbâl are the same person; the pronunciation differs in the dialect of the Turanians and the spelling in the dialect of the historians.

Consequently the Hittite ruler Sâbûl Han, since he rendered extraordinary services to the nation, must have entered among the gods of the Amâsîts after his death, and a statue must have been erected in his name and taken as an idol. For the statue of Sârûs (Sârîs), known historically to be the god of the Syrians and of the people of Âmûd (Âmid) in Syria and in the city of Âmûd, was also a statue erected in the name of the Hittite ruler Saru Han.

As understood from this inference, the person buried in the stone chamber in the Aynalı Mağara, who had influence equal to the ruler of Amasya, is İristâdî (Tîs, Tâyis), the great soothsayer of the statue, that is the idol, erected in Amasya in the name of the Hittite ruler Sâbûl Han. "Tâyis and Tâyiş" mean "teacher, hodja" in the Hatti language.

As related under the heading "Caves" in the introductory section, although most historians such as Texier maintain that some of the caves in Amasya belong to this period, it is not understood which belong to the Amâsîts and which to the kings of Pont. Whatever the case, it is a strong possibility that the great cave west of the Kızlar Sarayı, above the quarter, is among the works remaining from this period.

But it is thought that the Amâsîts living in the Harşena region were in contention over land with their border neighbors the Komânîts, and that the Komânîts temporarily took Harşena. For it is written in the histories relating these times that the town of Komanât (Kûmânât), now a district center within the Tokat sanjak, was formerly a broad and orderly city and repeatedly gained importance as the Komânîts' center.

Indeed, although the Amâsîts later prevailed over the Komânîts and the importance of Amasya was restored, in Anatolia after the Hittites the contention of the small Turan states with one another and the uniting of the other small nations against them forced some of the Turanians to migrate toward Central Asia.

According to the information given by European historians such as Morgan and Maspero, after the Hittite state in Anatolia was overthrown, the small Turan states weakened up to 1250 years before the Hijra; when the Palâzs, Phrygians, Lydians, Menîrîs and Greeks, like the Armenians, united against this glorious nation, the Turanians were withdrawing to the Caucasus.

If the general situation of these times, that is 1250 years before the Hijra, is followed and examined, it is seen that the Turanians were in distress on every side. At this time the states of China, Iran, Assyria and Egypt and the states that had arisen in Asia Minor were pressing the Turanians.

Since this calamity the Turanians met everywhere made all the Turan anars, kabars and clans extremely anxious, they were seeking a remedy to remove it. At that time the Turkish khan living in the Heytal region was Onkay (Okay) Han, son of Bilik Han.

Okay Han had abandoned his ancestors' way and become a fire worshipper like the Persians, and since he wearied all the Turks with the cruelty and attacks he committed to make the Turks accept his way, he had received the epithets "Kara Han" in reference to his cruelty and Yaguz (Yavuz) Han in reference to his killing many people. Although Kara Han was very cruel, he was unaffected by the calamities the Turanians suffered.

In the Mongol language "Onkay" is, in our dialect, the word "Okay" and means "olay," that is "easy." Although no other name of Kara Han is known in our histories written in Turkish and Chagatai, in Câmiu't-Tevârîh he appears as "Unvâkay, Unkay"; since Oghuz Han's other children mingled with the Mongol clans, they were called the land of "Unvâkât, Unkât, Unkût," and it became known that the Unkût Land among the Mongols was of Kara Han's line. In the genealogical registers Yaguz Han is written in place of Kara Han.

Kara Han had three sons. The two elder sons were in their father's way and temperament; the third son, known by the name "Kılık," though very well-behaved and valiant, loathed his father's cruelty and evils like the Turks and was also grieved at his brothers' conduct.

The person famous by the name "İrkil, Irkıl," one of the Turkish geniuses who pursued the auspicious aim of awakening the Turan clans, uniting them all around a single idea and belief, and rescuing the Turanians from the pressure of invading nations, found Kılık Han, among Okay Han's sons, suitable to his own thought. Irkıl was the son of a person named Burak, from the Karlık land and among the Turkish notables.

Irkıl Ata, to end Kara Han's cruelty, founded an association against Kara Han under the name "Tiri Kutug." After accepting the oneness of "Ogan," that is, the almighty exalted God, he gave the name "Ogar" to those who entered Tiri Kutug, "Ogur" to the decision Tiri Kutug gave, "Oğuz" to the head, that is the chief, of Tiri Kutug, "Oguş" to the money to be given to Tiri Kutug, "Og" to each of the divisions, that is arms, of Tiri Kutug, "Oguk" to the means to defend Tiri Kutug, and "Başbuğ" to the head of each Og.

Each Ogar (Acar), to recognize one another among the people, used the colors red and white on green as a sign of shedding blood for the faith; red on white as a sign of shedding blood for happiness; and green on white as a sign of accepting the religion of tawhid for happiness. White with green and red formed the colors of the standards, and green with red and white of the flags. Since yellow shows peace, gold thread was drawn in place of yellow on the khagan's standard; the yalaz (crescent) shape on the flags was also regarded as a sign of the rising and ascent of the light of fortune.

Irkıl Ata appointed Kılık Han (Oğuz) as head of the sacred association he had thus founded; as the importance of Tiri Kutug grew and the beys Kara Han trusted most began to become "ogars," and as the ogars multiplied, Oğuz Han placed them under an orderly administration and organization and worked for the Turanians' revival. For this reason in our Turkish histories every organization appears to be attributed to Oğuz Han.

In short, when this association founded against Kara Han, while he was occupied with his own pleasure and the hunt, reached the point of showing full power and might, one day, upon the "ogur" issued by Tiri Kutug, Oğuz Han with a self-sacrificing division of the ogars put an end to his father's cruelty and, defeating his two brothers in battle too, became Turkish khagan.

When Oğuz Han became Turkish khagan about 1400 years before the Hijra, he appointed Irkıl Ata vizier and adviser and first tried to unite the Turanians living in the Heytal (Turkestan) region. After succeeding in this he crossed the Oxus. He broke the cruelty of the fire-worshipping Persians and taught China its place.

Then, binding the Turan peoples in the Caucasus to himself, he trampled the various states that were pressing the Hıtâyîs (Hittites) in Anatolia; on one hand he took Syria and on the other, extending his border to the Danube, threatened Egypt. For the joining of the Turanians already in Anatolia to the union had eased Oğuz Han's invasion.

If the general histories are read and the situation of 1400-1250 years before the Hijra in Assyria, Anatolia, Iran, Turkestan, the Caucasus, Egypt and India is examined, it is understood that the events related are not among old legends. For the sovereignty of Turkish clans in Anatolia under the name "Sît" up to 1380-1190 years before the Hijra is among the important events recorded even by Western histories.

But there is no doubt that our Turkish histories record Oğuz Han's lineage in a very deficient and irrational way. Indeed it is thought that even the family tree we wrote in the introduction, quoted from the Silsilename, is deficient. For although it may be correct in the Silsilename that Oğuz Han was of the line of Bars Han, that Bars Han was the son of Altay Han is difficult according to historical events. In any case it is estimated that there were a great number of generations between Bars Han and Altay Han.

It is thought that during this confusion the Harşena region, that is the Amasya government, was in the hands of Argun Han, of the line of Karsân Han, who offered service under Oğuz Han's banner of union. The fortress of Arguma, that is Arhûniyye, at the end of the northern gorge of Amasya must be a work that this Argun Han had built.

When Oğuz Han died after ruling about seventy years, his son Güyün (Gün) Han became Turkish khagan. According to the historian Morgan's account, while this Gün Han's son Hâ'îg (Ayık) Han was ruler of Anatolia, it is thought that Barsevinç of the Bozoks was bar, that is governor of Amasya, of the Harşena region.

For Barsevinç, building a town at the place where the village of Marınca stands today near the present town of Merzifon, kept his name alive; it was first called "Barsevinç," then "Marsevinç," and today, corrupted from this, "Marınca." This is understood from its still being called "Marsivan" in popular speech.

When Barsevinç became governor of Amasya about 1340 years before the Hijra, the Bozok clans to which he belonged spread over the Harşena region and settled in various places.

Barsevinç widened the Harşena region and brought it to its old borders, rescued those places from the Armenians who had taken Cappadocia; the province of Amasya, as a broad privileged province, regained its old honor in Anatolia.

Then, while the various small states in Anatolia were again working to break the Turanians' strength, Gün Han, the Turkish khagan, sent Hâtî (Atıg) Han, his own son-in-law and ruler of Azak, son of Kimer Han, to Anatolia and had added to him Tirak Han, ruler of the Komanit land, and Uman Han, ruler of the Kimer land.

Charles Texier says in his work on Asia Minor: "These Sîts, under the command of their king Hadiyes, invaded Asia Minor at the end of the seventh century before Jesus and ruled there for twenty-eight years." And "The Armenians were Phrygian emigrants who fled Tirak's invasion and settled in Lesser Armenia."

What Texier calls Sîts are the Hittites who went from Anatolia to the Caucasus, and the Sâkîts, Komânîts and Kimerians; whom he calls Hadiyes is "Hatis, Hati, Atıg Han" and whom he calls Tirak is Tîrâk Han.

The Armenians had earlier, through Barsevinç's attack, gone out to Phrygia, that is outside the Kızılırmak basin; since they took part in the second disturbance they were forced to leave Phrygia too. The end of the seventh century before Jesus corresponds to 1318 years before the Hijra.

As written in the general histories, while Tirak Han crossed from the Dardanelles to Rumelia and took the Thrace region, and Uman Han, doing away with the Lydian ruler named Erdis II, took the Lydia, Phrygia and Caria regions, Arsak Han of the Bozoks had become bar, that is semi-independent governor, of Amasya in Barsevinç's place.

Although the Turanians who invaded Anatolia a second time were entirely Uygur, those living around Amasya, as explained in detail in the Introduction, were Bozoks of the On Uygurs. Since the On Uygurs are famous in history as "Huns, Hunlar," the Harşena region where the Bozoks lived also became famous as the "Un, Hun" region and was called "Unît, Hunît" by the Tibârîts and Kutâyîts living around it.

Thus it is thought that the Bozoks ruled in the Hunît region until 1132 years before the Hijra; in 1162 the ruler of Amasya among them was a person named Sevinç Han. But how many persons passed between Arsak Han and Sevinç Han and how many years each ruled is not known.

When the Persian ruler Keyhüsrev took the Armenia, Babylon, Media and Syria regions, Sevinç Han, ruler of Amasya, was obliged around 1155 to accept Persia's protection and preserved his position. In 1150 Keyhüsrev was captured in battle with a Turkish queen named Tamir Han, ruler of the Khazars, and killed, and his son Keykâvus also became shah of Iran.

But from 1155 Amasya was in the position of a privileged province dependent on Iran. Sevinç Han continued in the government of Amasya; when he died after the accession of Dârâ I, who became shah of Iran in 1143, his son İmâs Han became ruler of Amasya and secured his position by becoming son-in-law to Dârâ.

Théodore Reinach, one of the French historians, says in his work called History of Pontus: "The city of Gemlik was taken by the Persians in Keyhüsrev's time, and, having joined the Greek revolt in Dârâ's time, was retaken by force in the year 499 before Jesus by 'Hime Âs, Himâs,' son-in-law of the ruler Dârâ."

Since in Ahbâru'l-Bilâd the river flowing through the middle of the city of Amasya, called Nehr-i İmâs, is attributed to this İmâs Han, the person Reinach calls "Hime Âs, Himâs" will be precisely İmas Han, ruler of Amasya. Indeed this İmas Han developed the city of Amasya and had another town built around today's Samsun, and for this reason Amasya was later called "İmis, Emis" and the said town "İmisos, Emizos."

The year the historian Reinach calls 499 before Jesus means 1121 years before the Hijra. How many persons were ruler of Amasya after İmas Han's death up to 1053 years before the Hijra, and who they were, is not known. But 1053 years before the Hijra a person of the Bozoks named "Buzanis, Basan" was ruler of Amasya.

Basan Han, the last bey of the Bozoks in the Hun region, when he was defeated by the Greeks toward the end of the rule of the Persian shah Artaxerxes I, declared his independence like the beys of Lydia, Egypt and Media; but the Persian shah Artaxerxes II, who took the throne 1045 years before the Hijra, set in motion 1042 years before the Hijra with a great army he had prepared, punished the Medes in Anatolia, took the Hun region and ended the government of the Sevinçs in Amasya.

The Sans were a clan of the Turanians in Anatolia and, according to the explanation of Luba, one of the French historians, mean "Sevinçs." The Sevinçs' administrative center in Amasya is a beautiful town famous today under the name Ziyaret; it has been explained in the Introduction that in their time it was called "Sanit" and later mistakenly "Semendû."

In short, three Turan dynasties famous by the names "Amazon, Harşena, Hun," namely the Amâsîts who founded the city of Amasya and then the Huns who settled, ruled in Amasya for more than a thousand years; then their government ended at the said date through the Persians' attacks. Even so, the Turanians who remained in Amasya preserved their national identity and showed their presence repeatedly.

On the Method of the Text

In this section Hüsameddin places the oldest period of Amasya, with Turan and Oghuz identity, into history that today is attributed to the Hittites, Phrygians, Persians and the kings of Pontus. Most of the rulers named were found by the book's own method: one starts from the sound similarity between a place name and a person's name. It is claimed in this way that Havza was founded by "Kâvus Han," Gümüş by "Mangır Han," Sonusa in Erbaa by "Sânûs Han," and Amasya by "İmas Han." No document, inscription or other source is cited for any of these names; the text presents them as "it is thought," "it must be." The years before the Hijra are likewise given by the same method, by counting known dates backwards according to the Hijri calendar.

On the Hittites too, today's knowledge differs from Hüsameddin's. The Hittites are a people who spoke Hittite and Luwian, among the oldest known Indo-European languages, and founded a state centered on Hattusa in Central Anatolia. This state had its most powerful period in the middle of the 14th century BC. The counting of the Hittites as of Turan or Turkish origin does not appear in today's research; Hittite is a language with no kinship to Turkish.

The Name of Amasya and Its Early History

The oldest known name of Amasya is Amaseia. When and by whom the city was founded is not known for certain. It is thought to have existed before the time of Alexander the Great (336-323 BC) and its history to extend back to the Hittite period. In the Hellenistic period, in the age of the Seleucids, it was at times the capital of the kings of Pontus, and in 63 BC it was annexed within Roman borders. In the third century it gained importance as a bishopric center.

According to the explanation of the origin of the name prepared by the Amasya Governorship, the name Amaseia is connected with the words "Ama," meaning "mother" and especially honoring the Mother Goddess, and its variant "Mâ"; that is, it means "city of the Mother Goddess Mâ." Mâ is a goddess of eastern origin whose worship spread after the Persians took Anatolia, and is the local goddess of Cappadocia. Amaseia is the Greek-adapted form of the original pronunciation in the Persian period. Amasya is explained not by the names of the rulers "Amâs," "Amentâs" or "İmâs" that Hüsameddin proposes, but by this meaning. In the Roman period the name did not change much; on the city coins struck in the times of the Emperors Septimius Severus, Caracalla and Severus Alexander AMACIAC is written. In the Seljuk, Ilkhanid, beylik and Ottoman periods too the name has reached the present unchanged.

Strabo's geographical work describes Amaseia as a city founded on a rock slope, very strong by nature. The ancient city rose on the western bank of the Yeşilırmak (the ancient Iris), in a narrow and sheltered place. The high rock behind it houses the Harşena Fortress; beneath the twin peaks the cliffs descend 250 meters vertically to the river and close the city on two sides. At the foot of the fortress a terrace held by Hellenistic wall construction marks the place of the royal palace. The five monuments of the old Pontic kings are in the form of free-standing tomb structures carved into the bedrock; one of them (it may be Pharnaces I's) was left unfinished. The city is also the birthplace of the geographer Strabo.

The Royal Rock Tombs and the Aynalı Mağara

Hüsameddin's inferences on the caves and inscriptions in Amasya do not coincide fully with the history known today. The Royal Rock Tombs are on the southern slope of Mount Harşena, in the Kızlar Sarayı area. They belong to five Pontic kings, from the founder king Mithridates I Ktistes to Pharnaces I. The tombs are carved in a U shape, separated from the bedrock by galleries; they are counted among the most monumental tombs of Anatolia. Mount Harşena and the Pontic Royal Rock Tombs were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2015. The book leaves these tombs as "it is not understood whether they belong to the Amâsîts or the kings of Pont"; today it is known that they belong to the kings of Pontus.

The Aynalı Mağara is on the Ziyaret road, about 3.3 kilometers from the city center. It is a rock tomb and is known as the monumental tomb of the Mithras priest Tes, who lived in Amasya in the Hellenistic age in the second century BC. On the pediment of the cave "Great Priest Tes" is written; the name Hüsameddin reads as "Tîs" is most probably this Tes. The reading that this is "the great soothsayer of Sîbâl," that is, tied to a Hittite god, does not appear in today's sources. The cave's name comes from the shining of its facade when the sun strikes it. The interior of the tomb chamber was used by the Byzantines as a monastic cell in the eleventh century; it has colored wall paintings thought to have been made in this period. One correct direction in Hüsameddin's counting the Aynalı Mağara as the "tomb of the great soothsayer" is that the tomb belongs to the Great Priest Tes; but this priest is not a Hittite but a person of the Hellenistic age.

The Oghuz Khan Narrative

The conflict of Kara Han and his son Oğuz, in this narrative in which belief in one God is set against the father's idolatry, appears in Rashid al-Din's Câmiu't-Tevârîh and in the traditions reported by Abu'l-Ghazi Bahadur Khan. According to this tradition Kara Han, his father, hearing that Oğuz believed in one God, decides to kill him at a hunt; Oğuz learns of it thanks to his younger wife who warns him, fights his father and comes to the throne when Kara Han dies from an arrow that strikes him. In the Oghuz Khagan Epic in the Paris manuscript in Uyghur script, however, Oğuz's conflict with his father is not related. It is voiced by researchers that the narrative has a legendary side; that the name Kara Han is a Mongolian epithet and that the Mongol-Ilkhanid period in which the narrative was committed to writing suggest that this tradition was shaped later. Hüsameddin also takes Irkıl Ata and the Tiri Kutug association from this tradition, but by placing the event about 1400 years before the Hijra he ties it directly to Anatolian history. No document is cited for this dating; some researchers identify Oğuz Khan with the Hun ruler Mete, that is, assign the narrative a much later age.

Place Names

What Hüsameddin puts forward on the origin of the names of places such as Havza, Gümüş, Merzifon and Köprü is supposition. In the region the name of Gümüşhacıköy comes from its silver mines; in antiquity silver and arsenical copper were extracted here, and according to the Danişmendname silver from these mines was given to Danişmend Gazi's treasury. In the Seljuk period a mint was opened here in 1248. The book's "Mangır Han" explanation is independent of this mining history and rests only on similarity of names. Around Merzifon, copper was obtained in antiquity.
