The Şermîzades and the Dânişzades

The entry is less about the life of one person than about the branches of a family. The family tree reads as follows: Kutbeddîn Mustafa, Dâniş Mehmed, Hâfız Mustafa, İbrahim Ağa and his son Molla Celîl. The nickname "Şermîzâde" given to Dâniş Mehmed Efendi arose from the family's connection with a poet.

This poet is Şermî Osman Çelebi. According to the poets' section of the book, he was from Amasya, the son of Mehmed Çelebi, and is counted among the poets of Prince Sultan Ahmed, governor of Amasya. His son Belîğî Mehmed Çelebi studied in Amasya and, while a clerk at the mint, was admired for the qasida he presented when Prince Sultan Mustafa came to Amasya as governor, and was taken on as a divan clerk. In other words, the nickname "Şermîzâde" goes back to a family that made a name in poetry and clerkship in the palace circle during the period of Amasya's princely governors. What the date "915" in the entry refers to (a birth, a death or an event) cannot be understood from the text.

Another branch descended from the same ancestor is Dânişzâde el-Hâc İbrahim Efendi in entry 191. He is the son of Halil Efendi; Halil is the son of Hâfız Osman, son of Dâniş Mehmed. The İbrahim Ağa of this entry, by contrast, is the son of Hâfız Mustafa, son of Dâniş Mehmed. So the two Dânişzâde İbrahims are persons linked to the same ancestor but from different generations.

No information on Molla Celîl Ağa and the "Molla Halîloğulları" family was found in other sources.
