In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Çorumlu Ahmed Efendi, a mufti of Amasya, one of the earlier scholars. He became known as "Müftüzâde"; after completing his studies he worked for a long time as mukayyit (record-keeper) at the Amasya court. In 1154 [1741-42], as chief clerk of the court, he gained considerable influence and renown.

For this reason he was dismissed from the clerkship in 1156 [1743-44], and then became judge of Osmancık. He died around 1160 [1747]. Another Kadızâde el-Hâc İbrahim Efendi was likewise the son of el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi; he was among the deputy judges and died at about this time.

Müftüzâde İbrahim Efendi and the Amasya Court

In this entry Hüsameddin mentions two different İbrahim Efendis side by side. The first is the court clerk known as "Müftüzâde" because he was the son of a mufti. The second is another İbrahim Efendi, called "Kadızâde" and a deputy judge, about whom only the father's name and the date of death are known. The text gives no details about this second man.

Müftüzâde's career is an example of a path that rose from the clerical and registry work of a provincial sharia court to the office of judge. His move from registrar to chief clerk at the Amasya court brought him, in Hüsameddin's words, "influence and renown". The event that led to his dismissal is not stated in the text; it says only "for this reason".

The office of chief clerk of the Amasya court also appears in other biographies in the same volume. For example, Fazlızâde el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi also held this post, and the biography of his son İbrahim Efendi appears separately in this book. The years of service of Müftüzâde and Fazlızâde (1154 and after) are close to each other; whether the two clerks served as chief clerk in the same period or one after the other cannot be understood from the book.

No information on this person was found in other sources.
