In Modern English
He was from Amasya. He was the son of Hocazâde es-Seyyid el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi, mufti of Amasya. In Istanbul he acquired learning from el-Hâc Abdullah Hilmî Efendi, of Amasya, Yusuf Efendizâde, and completed his studies. After receiving the icazet he began to teach lessons (ders-i âm), won the Ru'ûs examination brilliantly and became a müderris; he became his teacher's son-in-law.
He devoted himself to teaching at the Fâtih Mosque and gave the icazet to quite a few students. While teaching, going through the customary rotation among the madrasas, he died in 1178 [1764-65] as müderris of the Süleymaniye Dârülhadis. He was one of the great scholars and good men. His son is the naqib al-ashraf (head of the Seyyids and Sharifs) es-Seyyid Abdurrahîm Fâ'iz Efendi.

The Rungs of the Madrasa and the Süleymaniye Dârülhadis
The career of İbrahim Efendi in this entry is the path of an Amasyan climbing to the highest rungs of the Ottoman madrasa hierarchy. As the encyclopedia entry notes, in the Ottoman system it mattered less in which madrasa a student studied than from which teachers he took lessons, and the chain of teachers was stressed in the icazetnames. Hüsameddin also writes the entry in exactly this logic: first his father (the mufti of Amasya), then his teacher in Istanbul, then becoming the teacher's son-in-law.
The Süleymaniye madrasas form the upper rungs of the system that divided madrasa education into twelve grades. At the very top of this ranking stands the Dârülhadis; this institution, located within the Süleymaniye Complex, is presented in the sources as the most advanced and highest-ranking section of the madrasa system. İbrahim Efendi died in 1178 while holding this post.
That his son Abdurrahîm Fâ'iz Efendi became naqib al-ashraf shows that the family stood out not only for learning but also for the esteem given to the Seyyid lineage. İbrahim Efendi's epithet is "es-Seyyid"; that is, Seyyid status is part of his own name. His father, Hocazâde, was the mufti of Amasya.
No information was found in other sources on his teacher, Abdullah Hilmî Efendi of Amasya, Yusuf Efendizâde, whom Hüsameddin mentions, or on Abdurrahîm Fâ'iz Efendi.
