Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Sivas'a yakın Yıldızeli kasabasından sipâhî Mehmed'in oğludur. Sipâhî kethüdâlığından zorbalığı sâyesinde Çankırı beyi olmuşdu. İhtilâlciler arasında buna "Yıldızlı İbrâhim" denmişdi. 1013 senesi şa'bânının evâsıtında sâniyen Amasya beyi olup hareket etdi.

Sivas beylerbeyi Ahmed Paşa'ya gelen fermânlar şâyân-ı dikkatdi. Birisi şudur: "Rûm beylerbeyi Ahmed Paşa'ya hüküm ki sâbıkâ Amasya sancağı beyi olan Tâhir-i müzevvir emirler yazıp tuğrâ çekip elinde müzevver emir tutulduğu mesmû'-ı hümâyûnum olmağın mezbûru ele getirip hakkından gelinmesini emr edib buyurdum ki".

İbrâhim Bey'e gelen fermânlarda Karahisâr'a hücûm edenlerin adları yazılmış olup şunlardı: Dündâr Mustafa, Arnavut Hüseyin, Çeribaşı Mehmed, Kızılbaş Hüseyin, Geduslu Alî, Köse Mahmûd, Yardımoğlu [364] Sefer Şâh, Şeytânoğlu İbrâhim, Karakuru Osmân, Bacı Süleyman.

Sivas beylerbeyi Ahmed Paşa Amasya üzerine hareket edib İbrâhim Bey de Çorum Beyi Mehmed Bey'le beraber Amasya üzerine yürümüşdü. Deli Tâhir Bey, kendisine edilen nasîhatı dinledi. Amasya'dan bilâ-vukû'ât çıkıp kapısı halkıyla Bursa'ya doğru gitdi.

Fakat erbâb-ı ihtilâlin meşâhîrinden Kara Sa'îd, Uzun Halîl başlarında olan cem'iyyetleriyle Tâhir Bey'den ayrılıp Sivas'a doğru gitmişlerdi.

Zilhiccede geldi.

Karahisâr-ı Şarkî'ye Tokâdî es-Seyyid Mehmed Paşa ve Trabzon'a Bâlî Paşa beylerbeyi olmuşlardı.

Kezâlik Trabzon ve mülhakâtında Murâd Hânoğulları Mustafa, Abdurrahmân ve Alî Beyler de teneffüz ederek kimseyi tanımaz olmuşlar, beylerbeyilere karşı koymağa başlamışlardı. Bu sebebden Bâlî Paşa bunlarla pek meşgûl idi.

1014 senesi evâ'ilinde İbrâhim Bey, kendi kethüdâsı Kör Yûsuf Ağa'yı Amasya mütesellimi nasb ederek Çankırı'ya gidip her iki sancağa birden mutasarrıf olmuşdu. Kör Yûsuf Ağa, İbrâhim Bey'den ziyâde zâlimâne hareket ederek herkesi sindirmişdi.

1014 senesi rebî'ulâhirinde Amasya müftüsü Emîr Alî Efendi vefât eylediğinden yerine Trabzon müftüsü ve Hâtuniyye müderrisi Şücâ'eddîn Efendi Amasya müftülüğüne ve müderrisliğine ta'yîn edildi.

Bîçâre Şücâ'eddîn Efendi, Trabzon'dan kalkıp Amasya'ya gelirken eşkıyânın ta'arruzâtına uğradı. Nîm-cân ile Amasya'ya geldi. Fakat bir ay sonra vefât etdi. Yerine cumadelâhiresinde Müftü Tâceddîn Efendizâde Ahmed Efendi Amasya müftüsü ve es-Seyyid Haydar Efendi nakîbü'l-eşrâf kâ'im-makâmı oldu. [366]

In Modern English

He was the son of the sipahi Mehmed from the town of Yıldızeli near Sivas. Through his bullying he had risen from sipahi kethüdâ to bey of Çankırı. Among the rebels he was called "Yıldızlı İbrâhim." In the middle of Shaban 1013 [1604-05] he became bey of Amasya for the second time and set out.

The decrees that reached Ahmed Pasha, beylerbeyi of Sivas, were noteworthy. One of them is this: "To Ahmed Pasha, beylerbeyi of Rum: since it has reached the imperial ear that the impostor Tâhir, formerly bey of the sanjak of Amasya, wrote orders and drew the tughra, and that a forged order was found in his hands, I have commanded and ordered that the said man be seized and dealt with."

In the decrees that reached İbrâhim Bey the names of those who attacked Karahisâr were written; they were these: Dündâr Mustafa, Arnavut Hüseyin, Çeribaşı Mehmed, Kızılbaş Hüseyin, Geduslu Alî, Köse Mahmûd, Yardımoğlu Sefer Şâh, Şeytânoğlu İbrâhim, Karakuru Osmân, Bacı Süleyman.

Ahmed Pasha, beylerbeyi of Sivas, had moved on Amasya, and İbrâhim Bey, together with Mehmed Bey, bey of Çorum, marched on Amasya. Deli Tâhir Bey listened to the advice given him. He left Amasya without a clash and went with his men toward Bursa.

But Kara Sa'îd and Uzun Halîl, among the famous of the rebels, left Tâhir Bey with the bands under them and went toward Sivas. At this time Mehmed Ağa, the former çaşnigirbaşı (chief of the table officials), had come to Amasya as steward of the Sivas registers. Unable to go on because of the bandits, he stayed in Amasya.

Yıldızlı İbrâhim Bey came to Amasya at the end of Shaban and entered the city as governor. Mehmed Bey, bey of Çorum, and Tokatlı es-Seyyid Mehmed Pasha had stayed with Ahmed Pasha, beylerbeyi of Sivas. In the fighting with Kara Sa'îd and Uzun Halîl, Mehmed Bey fell as a martyr and Ahmed Pasha was forced to flee. Kaya Paşazâde Mustafa Pasha, known as "Râziye Kadın Damadı" (son-in-law of Lady Râziye), was appointed to Sivas. He arrived in Dhu al-Hijjah.

İbrâhim Bey gathered the bandits of Amasya and its surroundings around him and tried to imitate Deli Tâhir Bey. The rebels who followed him were these:

Murâd Çavuşoğlu Alî, Hacı Bölükbaşı, Benezoğlu Hızır, Mü'ezzinoğlu Alî Bâlî, Kurd Zülfikâr, Serpaşmaklı Mehmed, Mü'ezzinoğlu Ahmed, Kurman Tiryâkioğlu Muslî, Sakaoğlu Hasan, Parmaksız Ahmed, Kara Mustafaoğlu Halîl, Danişmendoğlu Mehmed, Mustafa and Bâyezîd, Kapıcı Mûsâ.

Among them Ahmed, Zülfikâr, Halîl and Mustafa were terrible men. At this time in the town of Giresun an ignorant man named Mehmed Efendi, of the sheikhs, relying on his influence there, set up a claim to being the Mahdi. Those who followed him were many. Tokatlı es-Seyyid Mehmed Pasha had become beylerbeyi of Karahisâr-ı Şarkî, and Bâlî Pasha of Trabzon.

Again in and around Trabzon the Murâd Hânoğulları, the Beys Mustafa, Abdurrahmân and Alî, acting on their own heads, had come to recognize no one and had begun to resist the beylerbeyis. For this reason Bâlî Pasha was very busy with them.

At the beginning of 1014 [1605-06] İbrâhim Bey appointed his own steward Kör Yûsuf Ağa as mütesellim of Amasya, went to Çankırı, and became administrator of both sanjaks at once. Kör Yûsuf Ağa behaved more cruelly than İbrâhim Bey and cowed everyone.

In Rabi' al-akhir 1014, when the mufti of Amasya, Emîr Alî Efendi, died, Şücâ'eddîn Efendi, mufti of Trabzon and müderris of the Hâtuniyye, was appointed to the muftiship and professorship of Amasya in his place.

The poor Şücâ'eddîn Efendi, coming from Trabzon to Amasya, was attacked by bandits. He came to Amasya half dead. But he died a month later. In his place, in Jumada al-akhira, Müftü Tâceddîn Efendizâde Ahmed Efendi became mufti of Amasya, and es-Seyyid Haydar Efendi became deputy of the nakîbü'l-eşrâf.

But Kör Yûsuf Ağa's cruel conduct set the Celâlîs against one another. The people too were forced to complain. On these complaints İbrâhim Bey came from Çankırı to Amasya. He appointed Yûsuf Ağa bey of the sanjak of Çankırı in his own name and sent him off. He also put into his hand a decree worthy of sultans.

Yıldızlı İbrâhim Bey proved madder than Deli Tâhir Bey. Although he had declared sultanate and independence in Amasya, he was defying the very bandits who supported him. With his sultanly airs he offended everyone. The bandits could not bear this and had split into three branches.

One branch gathered under the sipahi kethüdâ Murâd Çavuşoğlu Alî Ağa, another under Köprülü Mü'ezzinoğlu Ahmed Ağa. The third remained following İbrâhim Bey. As soon as the commander-in-chief Nasûh Pasha learned of this situation, he dismissed İbrâhim Bey, gave the sanjak governorship of Amasya to Mü'ezzinoğlu Ahmed Ağa in his place, and charged him with punishing İbrâhim Bey.

Yıldızlı İbrâhim

Yıldızlı İbrâhim, of Yıldızeli origin, is one of the well known names of the Celâlî revolts. According to a document reported by Mustafa Akdağ, at the end of 1604 he raided Gerede, in the sanjak of Bolu, and its surroundings together with "Celâlî Hüseyin," with a levend company of three hundred men; the sanjak governor of Bolu was likewise collecting about six hundred sekbans and suhtes from the Düzce region and preparing to avenge this. Hüsameddin's writing that he was bey of Çankırı and had reached this post through his bullying agrees with this picture. Akdağ also notes that most of the Celâlî chieftains were given the sanjaks of their region, while those given beylerbeyiliks were appointed to distant provinces, and that Yıldızlı İbrâhim, as the one exception, was given the beylerbeyilik of Rum (Sivas). Hüsameddin, however, in later pages writes that İbrâhim Bey claimed to be beylerbeyi of Sivas and showed a forged decree. It is not possible to resolve the difference between the two accounts without looking at the document.

Forged Decrees and the Claim to Sovereignty

From the decree in the text, in which Deli Tâhir is said to have "written forged orders and drawn the tughra," it can be seen how Tâhir's declaration of independence was received at the center: producing a forged document in the sultan's name also meant a claim to sovereignty. Hüsameddin says that İbrâhim Bey followed the same path and declared himself sultan in Amasya. The rebels' division among themselves is also plainly visible in the text. That Kara Sa'îd and Tavil Halîl later became attached to Kalenderoğlu is reported by Akdağ on the basis of Katip Çelebi.

The Muftiship and the Madrasa

The changes of mufti at the end of the text show that the fatwa office was being filled even amid the turmoil. It is also understood from the text that the muftiship was given together with the professorship of the Hâtuniyye. No information on Emîr Alî and Şücâ'eddîn Efendi was found in other sources.

Köprü and Mü'ezzinoğlu Ahmed

Köprülü Mü'ezzinoğlu Ahmed Ağa, named at the end of the section, appears in the next entry as bey of Amasya. That Köprü was attached to the sanjak of Amasya, and that Köprülü Mehmed Pasha was called Köprülü because he settled in this town, is written in the TDV entry on Köprülü Mehmed Pasha.
