In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of el-Hâc Osman Ağa, known as "Şehirlioğlu"; Osman Ağa was the son of Şehrî el-Hâc İbrahim Ağa. He studied under the renowned scholar Iydîzâde el-Hâc Âkif Mustafa Efendi, and then under the Great Hâfız Mehmed Efendi of Amasya, who had been a student of Kazâbâdî el-Hâc Ahmed Efendi in Istanbul. He received his license (icazet) and gained the authority to give general lectures. By examination he became a madrasa professor in Istanbul in 1168 [1754-55], and in 1191 [1777-78] he went from the professorship at the Süleymaniye Dârülhadis to the office of Mollah of Jerusalem (Kudüs-i Şerîf). He died in the early part of 1196 [1781-82]. He was a learned and mature man.

Advancement in the Professorate

The entry shows a move from a professorship in Istanbul to the Süleymaniye Dârülhadis, and finally to the mollahship of Jerusalem. According to the encyclopedia article, professors who rose from the lower madrasas advanced by examination to a professorship at the Sahn; professors at the Süleymaniye and dârülhadis grades stood on a ladder leading to the judgeship of Istanbul and to the military judgeships (kazasker) of Anatolia and Rumelia. Şehirlioğlu's career follows this line. Hüsameddin writes that he was appointed by examination to a professorship in Istanbul in 1168.

His teacher Iydîzâde Âkif Mustafa Efendi was a poet of Amasya of the same period and died in 1173 [1759-60]. No information could be found in the sources I read about his other teachers, Kazâbâdî Ahmed Efendi and the Great Hâfız Mehmed Efendi. No information could be found about the exact length of his term as Mollah of Jerusalem or about the Şehirlioğlu family. No information about this person was found in other sources either.
