In Modern English

He was the son of Hacı Beyzade Velî Pasha of Amasya. While bey of Urfa he had shown merit in the Iranian wars. Hüseyin Ağa, steward of the sipahis of Amasya, became mütesellim of Amasya (deputy of the sanjak bey); Mehmed Bey could not come because he was occupied with the Dagestan war.

In Rajab of the year 991 [1583–84], a zeamet of twenty-four thousand akçe that had fallen vacant within the borders of Amasya, when it was about to be given to Turks, was instead given as a promotion to Hüsrev Bey, one of those who converted to Islam later in life, upon the report of the beylerbeyi of Basra. The Turks were angered.

In Safar of 992 [1584–85], since the mufti of Amasya, Ayas Efendi, died, Küçük Mahmud Efendi of Saruhan came for the second time as mufti of Amasya. The professorship of the Sultaniye had also been given to him. Yet he was not worthy of this.

Notes and Research

  • sipâhî kethüdâsı: steward of ağa rank at the head of the sipahi soldiers
  • ze'âmet: a large livelihood grant whose annual income was set high
  • mühtedî: a person who has converted to Islam later in life
  • terakkî: advancement, promotion
  • uhde: a duty placed in a person's charge

Changes Seen in the Same Period

The entry is short and narrates three separate events in succession: a deputy's serving in Amasya in the absence of the sanjak bey, a vacant zeamet's being given not to Turks but to someone who converted to Islam later in life, and a change in the office of mufti. Hüsameddin places these three events side by side not as separate subjects but as parts describing the tension of the same period. The sentence "the Turks were angered" shows that the author interprets this period as a division between Turkish and non-Turkish administrators; this interpretation is treated in more detail in the following entries.

The death of Ayas Efendi of Aydın, mentioned in the previous entry, is given in this entry as Safar 992. This date is consistent with the sequence in the previous entry: Ayas Efendi became mufti after Arslan Bey and died in Mehmed Bey's time. The combining of the muftiship and the professorship of the Sultaniye in one person shows, according to Hüsameddin's account, that in this period the muftiship of Amasya was given together with the professorship of the Sultaniye Madrasa; Küçük Mahmud Efendi's coming to this post for the second time is a continuation of the same practice.

Apart from the information the book gives about Mehmed Bey (his father's name, the beylik of Urfa, the Iranian and Dagestan campaigns), no detail was found in other sources. No information could be reached in other sources about Hacı Beyzade Velî Pasha either.
