Halvetiyye meşâyihi büyüklerinden eş-Şeyh Nûh Efendi Amasya'da vefât etdi. Cenâzesi mu'azzam bir ihtifâl ile kaldırıldı. Çünkü halkın nazarında pek yüksek bir mevki'i vardı. Kendisine "Veliyyullâh" diye i'tikâd edilirdi.

In Modern English

He was one of those who converted to Islam later in life. At the beginning of Rajab of 977 [1569–70] he became sanjak bey of Amasya; Sağır Behrâm Pasha also became beylerbeyi of Sivas. When Behrâm Pasha was assigned to a campaign at the beginning of Ramadan, Kâsım Bey became guardian of the province of Sivas.

Sheikh Nûh Efendi, one of the great Khalwati sheikhs, died in Amasya. His funeral was held with a great ceremony, because he held a very high place in the eyes of the people. He was believed to be a "friend of God" (Veliyyullâh).

It is seen in the registers of decrees that Murâd Bey in 979 [1571–72], Mahmûd Bey in Dhu al-Hijja 980, and Sinan Bey in 982 [1574–75] were sanjak beys of Amasya. But who they were and their biographies could not be understood. Only Murâd Bey is thought to be Kuyucu Murâd Pasha.

When "Sarı Sultan Selim" died on the twenty-eighth day of Shaban of the year 982 [1574–75], his son Murad III came from Manisa and ascended the Ottoman throne. At the beginning of 983 [1575–76], Şehsüvâr Bey was appointed to the mîrlivâlık (sanjak governorship) of Amasya.

Sheikh Nûh Efendi and the Khalwatis of Amasya

That Sheikh Nûh Efendi is counted among the Khalwati sheikhs shows once more Amasya's tie with this order. The article that studies the Khalwati lodges mentions a building called the "Nuhoğlu Lodge"; but this lodge is known by the name of Hacı Nuh Efendi, preacher of the Çeribaşı Mosque, and the building's history goes back to the years 1704 and 1730 (it was first built as a madrasa, and after it burned down a Khalwati zawiya was established in its place). The Nûh Efendi in the book, however, lived in the sixteenth century; no link can therefore be made between the two persons. No separate record was found about Sheikh Nûh Efendi.

Appointments and Hüsameddin's Doubt

Hüsameddin gives the names of three different sanjak beys in the years 979, 980 and 982, noting that he does not know who they were. He also expresses the view that Murâd Bey was Kuyucu Murâd Pasha as "it is thought"; that is, he does not present this as certain information. In another source we could not verify this identification. No additional information was found about Kâsım Bey and Sağır Behrâm Pasha either.

The Change of Throne

According to the TDV entry on Murad III, Murad acceded to the throne on 8 Ramadan 982 (22 December 1574); as the sultanate's system required, five princes were strangled that day, and the funeral ceremony of Selim II fell on the same day. Hüsameddin gives the twenty-eighth of Shaban as the day of death. Murad was indeed in Manisa at that time: according to the TDV he had been sanjak bey of Saruhan since 1562.
