In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He is Hacı Beyzâde Deli Murtezâ Pasha. On the first day of Muharram 1089 [1678] he came as governor of Amasya by way of retirement. But since he was very old and ill, in his name his paternal cousin Ahmed Ağa, kethüda of the gatekeepers (kapıcılar kethüdâsı) of Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, became mütesellim of Amasya.

Since Murtezâ Pasha died on the nineteenth day after his arrival in Amasya, the sanjak of Amasya was given to Ahmed Ağa, the mütesellim of Amasya.

Deli Murtezâ Pasha and the Hacı Beyzâdes

Murtezâ Pasha also appears in Hüsameddin's earlier entries. He is the son of Hacı Beyzâde Şâhin Bey and was raised from the silahdar ağalık of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha. He first became governor of Amasya in Muharram 1080 [1669], and in 1083, as beylerbeyi of Sivas, had stopped at Amasya and stayed a few days. In the previous entry he is called "former beylerbeyi of Maraş." The sanjak given by way of retirement was the Pasha's own home town; but nineteen days after the Pasha came here, around the twentieth of Muharram 1089 [March 1678], he died. Hüsameddin's placing in the next entry of Ahmed Bey's sanjak governorship on the twentieth day of Muharram agrees with this reckoning.

His family is one of the old and deep-rooted dynasties of Amasya. Hüsameddin writes that the site of the Sultan Bâyezîd Complex was bought, after Bayezid II's accession to the throne, from the garden of Hacı Beyzâde Hamza, İlyas, and Hızır Beys; and that Hacı Beyzâde Mehmed Bey in 1071 [1660-61] repaired a mosque and added a waqf. The paternal cousin Ahmed Ağa, appointed to the mütesellimship, will be introduced in the next entry as "son of Hacı Beyzâde Halil Ağa, one of the ağas of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha." That the Pasha was raised at the side of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha and his cousin at the side of Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha shows that the family was closely tied to the Köprülü circle.

No information was found in a source other than Hüsameddin about Deli Murtezâ Pasha. In the same period there were other pashas named Murtaza, and they should not be confused. Chief among them are the Murtaza Pasha, governor of Diyarbekir, who served as commander in the revolt of Abaza Hasan Pasha, was defeated at Ilgın in December 1658, and did away with Abaza Hasan in Aleppo in 1659; and the Murtaza Pasha, beylerbeyi of Kefe, who in some sources is linked to the same person and who defended the fortress of Azov against the Russians in 1695. It is impossible for the Deli Murtezâ Pasha whom Hüsameddin writes as dying in 1089 to have been the defender of Azov in 1695. Although his having been raised from Köprülü Mehmed Pasha's silahdarlık and the commander of 1659 being called "Silahdar Murtaza Pasha" in some sources suggest that the two could be the same person, no record showing this could be found. The Zileli Murtezâ Pasha who was governor of Amasya in the work's earlier entries is yet another person.
