In Modern English

He was the son of Gülâbî Pasha, who rose in Amasya from the kapıcılar kethüdalığı (stewardship of the gatekeepers) of Prince Sultan Mustafa Han to the beylerbeyilik of Şehrizor. He was born in Amasya. While among the holders of zeamets, he later went on the Szigetvár campaign as alaybeyi of Amasya.

Since his merit was seen in the battles he entered the ranks of the beys, and while sanjak bey of Çorum he fell as a martyr in a sea battle in 978 [1570-71]. He arranged the waqfs of the zaviye he had built in İçeri Şehir in Amasya in his father's name. His sons were Gülâbî and Mehmed Beys. Gülâbî Beyzâde Ahmed Bey, who was trustee of the waqf, is also a well-known figure.

Gülâbî, Adviser of Prince Mustafa

Ahmed Bey's father Gülâbî is among the leading names in Prince Mustafa's circle in Amasya. In the thesis Semra Güler prepared on Prince Mustafa, it is noted that, together with Gümüşlü Hoca Sülümüş Çelebi, the prince's counsellor, the head of the gatekeepers "Gülâbî Hoca" was among those Mustafa consulted most. The thesis bases this information on another volume of Hüsameddin's book; that is, the information on Gülâbî again comes largely from the Amasya Tarihi. Since Prince Mustafa was strangled near Konya Ereğlisi in 1553, Gülâbî's appointment to the beylerbeyilik of Şehrizor was probably after this date, after the prince's men had been dispersed. But the date of this appointment was not seen in other sources.

Szigetvár and the Sea Battle of 978

The Szigetvár campaign, in which Ahmed Bey took part as alaybeyi of Amasya, was Süleyman the Magnificent's last campaign; the sultan, whose illness advanced, died in 1566 without seeing the fortress taken. The timar-holding sipahis of the sanjak of Amasya must have joined this campaign under the alaybeyi's command.

The matter of the sea battle in which Ahmed Bey fell as a martyr calls for some attention. In these years the Ottoman navy had two great operations: the campaign against Venetian-ruled Cyprus in 978 (1570) and the conquest of the island, and the great naval battle fought at the Gulf of Lepanto on 7 October 1571 with the fleet of the Crusader alliance formed in response. The Battle of Lepanto falls in hijri 979. If Hüsameddin's date of 978 is right, Ahmed Bey must have died in the naval operations during the Cyprus campaign; if the date is shifted by a year, he may be among those who fell as martyrs at Lepanto. No record was found to determine which is meant.

The Gülâbî Pasha Zaviye

The zaviye in İçeri Şehir that Ahmed Bey had built in his father's name appears in other entries of Hüsameddin's book under the name "Gülâbî Pasha Zaviye"; even in the mid-seventeenth century the family's descendants were still holding the trusteeship of this waqf. No information on this zaviye was found in a study examining the zaviyes of Amasya by the hurufat records or in other sources; whether the building stands today could not be determined either.
